I agree, the main thing we need is commerce to support our cities... which means cottages. I think its quite feasible to make a hybrid hammer/cottage farm out of our capitol. It has decent food, some hills, and 4 river side grass. I suppose, we should figure out what's up north before deciding too far ahead.

Pick China for starting techs. Get a fishing/hunting start. alright

It seems that best opening that I've come out so far is pretty close to the one presented already. i.e. Hunting-Fishing-BW then towards pottery and Writing. Plant 2 fast cities besides the fishes and slow build WB's in them. These cities are relatively easy to get commercewise neutral or profitable in this setup. Third city in the north should come around we get Pottery/AH and with cottages it comes easily profitable. After 1st warrior is finished I would build a scout while growing to size 2 and send him out.

Fish cities could be located on the plains hill in the west and maybe 1E or SE from the fishes in the east. Alternatively we could keep cities closely backed and plant it 1SW from the fishes. However scouting might reveal better positioning.

Before BW we can do with 1 or possibly 2 workers, but after that we need lots of them to spam cottages.

Even if it would be relatively easy to get 5 cities up before T50, I'm not in favor of this unless we found a place with high commerce tiles close by. Better to have 1 extra worker around.

I support founding the sheep + sugar + fish city(Noms?) but not the other by the mountain. It isn't going to grow fast enough with only the fish. As for Noms, we we could make it a slave camp. We have 2 foods, and eventually 3f2c tiles to work with sailing. Would be worth it if we could secure a 1NE from the fish. We work the lake tiles for commerce and whip for production. As for city 3, I am looking at the Whales + Cow + Sheep location. We'll have plenty of commerce and production up there with all that river-side green.

Actually, now that I think about it, I think it is better to found in the opposite order and getting AH then BW then fishing. We simply can't confidently secure a food rich start for the Noms fish site. A good location for fish is effectively 2 cities away. Otherwise we have fish.... and plains... and probably taiga... with few choppable trees. However, if we get AH and go north, we can share the cows and secure sheep while being on river for ++ commerce. Then we can figure out how to secure the fish site.

Yeah. Don't know what NOMS actually means, but google tells me that best matches are

Nom - The sound made when eating something (or someone). Can be referred to as "nomming" as a verb, and is often pronounced int he sentence "om nom nom".

or

National Offender Management Service

Well a place to handle criminals sounds pretty good name for a city, but I think this isn't barren enough for that purpose wink.
