[Spoilers] Old Harry's Game

I had planned to spend the first post of my first spoiler thread describing a terrible strategy in great detail to manage expectations. But now that you can't see the first post from the forum view I guess I'll just put this here:

So I'll wait until we get a screenshot before going into detail about leader and civ picks, but here is a list of my favourite traits:

- Fin
- Cre
- Spi

I know that Exp and Imp are supposed to be great, but I always end up accidentally spending food on workers, I never get my specialists working well enough to justify Phi and Org is just boring...

So I'll want Mansa or Willem, or maybe Hatty, Izzy, Joao, Sury or Vicky. But what if Pacal is available? Hmmm... Help!

I am not a fan of Imp (and I actually don't think many at RB rate it very highly at all), and I personally like Exp more for that first worker and for the cheap granaries than cheap workers overall. I would personally go with Pacal first, but Willem and Mansa are also very good. I am not a huge fan of João unless you're opponents also don't have strong economic traits, and depending on your playstyle and the likelihood of grabbing the Pyramids, I would rank Gandhi and Peter above Lizzy and definitely above Vicky. Hatty is interesting-I am not sure where I would place her, probably about the same place Lizzy.

Just my opinions, of course.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

your pic doesn't work frown.

Glad to see another SPI fan out there, its my #2 behind FIN. Not a fan of CRE really though. I guess this is a small map though so it might be useful.

The pic should be fixed now.banghead

I think I like SPI and CRE through laziness really - you don't have to put as much planning into a game if you know you can switch civics if you want and that your borders will pop automatically. If I put a bit more effort in than I normally do with single player perhaps EXP or PHI would be better.

I don't normally go for PHI as I've never had a strategy for using the Great People other than for golden ages. Having read a bit about GP here though I might try it again at some point nod

It sounds like tech trading will be off so my guess is that whoever goes first will take India, then FIN leaders will fall, so we'll see how the pick order pans out...

I like SPI for the flexibility, but also it just opens up new strategies. If I'm not SPI, for instance, I don't find nationhood, CS, or pacificism to be reasonable civics outside of golden ages (and of course you don't want to be drafting in a golden age, so I never use nationhood if I'm not spiritual). But with spiritual, I can use 5 turns of nationhood/theocracy, draft myself into the ground, then switchout with a load of rifles while my cities wear off the draft-weariness. Or, doa 5 turn run of representation, CS, and pacifism if I need a great person or two smile. and there are a lot more little things like that (switching religions on for temporary gain) that just aren't feasible for non-spiritual civs - the rules of the game are just completely different smile.

FIN & SPI are really the only two civs that have benefits in early, mid, and late game. Neither have the quick early boost of EXP and CRE, but those two just aren't that useful anymore 100 turns into the game. imo.

are you picking last?

You're right - it's flexibility not laziness!

Pick order isn't determined yet, still working out time slots. But yeah, Mansa is probably my first choice (until we see the starts at least). I'll be coming to you for advice on leveraging SPI if I get him...

Welcome in, shame you couldn't play - to be honest I've got a pretty irregular schedule too, but thought that I could be pretty sure to play at midnight. I don't think that's going to help the quality of my game, so I'm sure I'll be asking for a lot of advice here!
