Hopefully you're still useful to your boss otherwise that might change
I'm pretty sure the whole Northern Europe would collapse without my efforts..

When weeks are light it's surely great, but with taxes being what they are in Finland during periods like this I would almost be better of serving burgers at McDonalds or something similar (when measured with net income / hour)...

Someone isn't living up to his forum name, Fin tourist! I don't know how much sightseeing you can do when you spend most of the week laboring away. Good luck, I hope this is temporary.
Krill, I like it. Maybe I'll look for part time when I get my next contact.

I was earlier going to suggest that due to nature of the game you should just pick the pair that seems the most fun to you and maybe after that start thinking competitively. However, as I've already expressed, my opinion is that in reality the game is more fun when one is doing well and has as many options as possible --> In the end one should just be dull, pick the strongest pairing and also put some effort into micro so that one stays relevant.
Not having played ORG or PHI competitively this will probably be the most fun combo as well as the strongest.
(November 4th, 2015, 16:28)Fintourist Wrote: Regarding the above, when I look at the start it seems clear that worker techs will be a real bottleneck and thus Agri/Wheel has actually a lot of value. And there is also a clear synergy between Egypt and sheep start, which I like. I fear that you don't get a chance to utilize the obelisk, but who knows, it's always possible that other civs delay religion techs as well.
Yeah it'll be nice to see Horse early and get War Chariots in play. Having Agri, Wheel, AH, Mining, BW, Fishing and Pottery by t45 is my estimate, which seems sloooow having played so much RTR. Obelisk specialists might be handy if I need a golden age or capture a shrine, but I doubt I'll be founding any religions (unless we have a CoL beeline or I can somehow bulb Theology).
(November 4th, 2015, 16:28)Fintourist Wrote: I guess my hypothesis for a general strategy in this game would be:
- Brutally optimize early speed at all costs with the first 3-4 cities
- Start playing greedy and establish advantageous borders with the help of War Chariots
- Enjoy ORG and be the first civ to 15 cities
- Kill the weakest neighbor and be cheesy with PHI in the mid-game
- Profit
Does "at all costs" mean one warrior for two cities or 6/15 of a warrior for two cities? We'll have to see how the rest of the points go...

They're still working you that hard? How long before you make management and can slow down? I could have sworn we were supposed to have robots doing our jobs by now so we could sit by the pool sipping cocktails. And flying cars.

I thoroughly recommend part time, although don't have a kid too - that really eats into your gaming .

Thought I'd have a look at what everyone ended up with. Obviously not taking land or neighbours into account so this will be wildly inaccurate, but I'll rank them and make a prediction based on pick alone:
#1 - Best combo
Dantski and V8mark - Darius I (FIN/ORG) Ottoman (Agri/Wheel/Janissary/Hammam)
Looks like Dantski's tech thread bantering paid off for him. He'll need to watch out early on, but if he survives should be roaring along by the medieval era.
#2
2metraninja and OT4E - Julius Caesar (IMP/ORG) Viking(Fish/Hunt/Berserker/Trading Post
Wow. Someone has a poor opinion of these guys! This is such a scary combination on a watery map and I'd rate these two in the top four anyway, so don't let me start on the same body of water as them... I'll call them the (weighted for skill) pick winners and most likely game winners.
#3
TheWannabe - Elizabeth (FIN/PHI) Arabia (Myst/Wheel/Camel Archer/Madrassa)
Perhaps he just really wanted to play PHI with the extra Madrassa priest slots? Do you guys have a higher opinion of him than I do? I don't think this will be his breakthrough performance, but I guess he'll learn a few things from PB27.
#4
Alhazard - Isabella (SPI/EXP) Sumerian (Myst/Fish/Vulture/Ziggurat)
Should land a religion and might as well gun for the Oracle while he's at it. If he gets those I think he'll be in contention.
#5
Greywolf - Zara Yaqob (CRE/ORG) Spanish (Fish/Myst/Conquistador/Citadel)
My lost combo! This one would have pushed Fred close and probably just pipped him. Greywolf did alright and lost to very good FFH players in the games he's played, so I'll predict a contender.
#6
Old Harry - Frederick (PHI/ORG) Egyptian (Agri/Wheel/War Chariot/Obelisk)
This could be a decent combo in the right hands. Dunno if I am those hands though.
#7
R.E.M. - Wang Kon (FIN/PRO) German (Hunt/Mine/Panzer/Assembly Plant)
So will PRO let him turtle until FIN does the heavy lifting and the civ actually contributes something? I'm going to guess no...
#8
Molach - Stalin (AGG/IND) Mongolian (Hunt/Wheel/Keshik/Ger)
AGG Mongols! We're in trouble... Another guy to avoid neighbouring, but probably not in the running for the game.
#9
Ipecac - Napoleon (CHA/ORG) Native American (Agri/Fish/Dog Soldier/Totem Pole)
He should be after Stonehenge, after that I'm not sure... If this is a happy-starved map then maybe this combo is better than it looks.
#10 - Worst combo
Gavagai - Louis XIV (IND/CRE) Dutch (Fish/Agri/East Indiaman/Dike)
This is a pretty late civ, and IND/CRE isn't amazing. Perhaps he'll look to grab Colossus and never get Astronomy? [edit: not Portugal ] I don't think even Gavagai can make much out of this, but he will try to pull some crazy gamble to get into the game and it might just work.
So that's 2metra for the win, Alhazard, Dantski and Greywolf close but no cigar while Molach and Gavagai might pull off high-risk high-reward maneuvers to get in with a chance, but they won't win. How far off am I?

Wow, I'm surprised by your poor rating of Louis. I take it that you're not a fan of neither of Ind or Cre? I've never seen a BTS tier list without Cre in the tier right below Fin, and Ind is either in that 2nd tier or, at the very least, in the 3rd.
How would you rank the BTS traits?
