CMF,
Your math is roughly similar to what I wrote up at the end of my last post (I think I figure T28 for your pantheon). I do think you should buy a builder after you found your city. It should be 7 turns of travel and if I send you my gold that turn, you should have the 200Icon_Gold needed to buy the Builder. I am also thinking I might run God King until to make sure I get the first pantheon, just in case Russia starts a project and/or has a good Larva location.

As for waiting until we conquer Kandy for a Holy Site, it is an option but I might want one earlier for more faith to buy buildings but it is not a high priority. Maybe as the first district in my 3rd city, IDK. We do have time to think about it and we still need to find a Natural wonder.

One more thing, I ended up playing my turn late last night. I had actually already shut down my computer and was heading to bed when I got the notification. I will have to wait to write up my turn until after work and it will probably be a 2 turn report. Just a heads up.

Not much going on but it took me a little bit to figure out what Emperor K did since his empire score went up by 6. I was wondering how he could have grown a population and founded a city so fast. It wasn't until I remembered that unique districts give double points and I saw the GP screen that I realized he finished a Larva.

Yeah, my first thought was that they captured a city-state, since it seems utterly impossible to have a settler out and in position already. Then I thought that the domination scores hadn't changed enough to reflect a serious conflict like that (maybe Japper's fighting a city state instead of barbarians, though? That hadn't occurred to me. Will keep an eye out for sure), so I thought district, especially once I remembered Russia's half-price holy sites. Quick check of the GP screen confirmed it.

Turn 14

Two turns in one day for me! A little more than 14 hours to race through all 8 players - not bad at all.

A quiet turn. First, score update:

No new developments, at least nothing major. Emperor K's Lavra begins humming along. Japper, Emperor, Singaboy, Sullla, and Mike have all grown their capitals to size 3, which means Woden and I are lagging somewhat in the growth department. Not sure how I could have done it faster without sacrificing production, though - I didn't want to delay the Settler or Code of Laws, so I think I made the right call here, especially if Operation Pantheon pays off. One pop here or there shouldn't decide things, though - the map and game are big enough that (I hope) grand strategy will make more of a difference than tiny micro decisions like this.

The barbarian scout appears between Kabul, Woden's planned site of Horus, and Trafalgar. Woden's slinger is approaching it, so I halt my warrior for a moment to try and trap the scout.

My own scout continues his probe of lake Malta, to find that the continent continues on in that direction:

I hope it doesn't go all the way to our neighbors' lands, or if it does, that it's a small isthmus. If control of the sea doesn't mean controlling access to our own continent, I shall have to re-evaluate my entire gameplan. The amount of plains hills here is appalling.

Not much going on otherwise. I need to scout the area directly north of my capital, and we need to get vision on the area directly south of Woden's. I plan to swing my scout around Lake Malta and drive south for the coast there, then bounce back, gradually driving the fog back that way.

Nubia-Turns 13 & 14

Turn 13
Open the save to...

Because CMF met Valletta last turn. Check the quest and I need to build a galley. Lucky that both Kandy and Valletta want a galley. Maybe I should put my 2nd city on the coast. IDK, 3rd still might be best.

Move my warrior and slinger in their respective directions, finding more horses and some dyes. Might be a nice city in the east...

As previously mentioned, I noticed that Emperor K's score jumped 6 points...empire score. Had a hell of a time trying to figure what combination could lead to 6 points...new city plus grow. Did they take out a city state? That would be early and it would have been close. Check the great people screen...

He is making GP points, then it dawned on me that unique districts provide 6 points instead of 3. I will have to make note for future reference. Kongo, Russia, Germany, England, Khmer, and Rome all have unique districts but not sure if Khmer is a replacement district or their ability is additive. Do you know if there aqueduct is half price?

Turn 14
Open the save to find that barb scout moved next to my slinger...

Took a whack at him, hopefully he sticks around, Probably not, he will probably move west. Builder finishes, so I move him to pasture the horses...

Figure I will pasture the horses, go farm the wheat (for faster growth), and then I am not sure if I should pasture the sheep or mine the jade in 8 turns. Sheep will provide anotehr 2/3 tile but Jade would be 1Icon_Food/2Icon_Production/1Icon_Culture/2Icon_Gold and it might be nice to have a tile that gives a little culture and gold to work if I need either. What do you think?

Pasturing the horses dropped teh slinger from 4 turns to 3 turns...

Next one will probably take 4 turns since I will want to work the farmed wheat to shave a turn off growth. I was also thinking I might want to buy the rice soon for faster growth. It would give a 5Icon_Food tile once farmed. And when I put a city in the north by the lake, I could swap it between them. Maybe after I take a barb camp.

CMF,
Even if the continents are connected, navel warfare will matter later in the game if people settle the coast or as defenses along a narrow isthmus. Plus with this terrain, travelling by sea might be faster to invade someone. I am very interested in see if the continents are connected and am going to send my warrior until I find the end of our continent or another player.

A quick turn report before I have to leave to go see The Last Jedi...

Turn 15

Barb scout is no where in sight. Figured he moved west and south. Move my slinger southwest and see him. Guess I am going to have to chase this guy down. Hopefully he corners himself somewhere. Warrior in the east moves to the eastern hill to see what is over there and find...

Which gives...

Hopefully it gives CMF the same, since that is the route he is taking. Code of Laws finally finishes next turn and I will be able to farm the wheat for faster growth.

Turn 15

The turn came to me in timely fashion, but I've had a heck of a day. Right after work I set off across the state to visit relatives for the holidays (this weekend only), but a variety of factors intervened, and I was only just able to sit down and play. I'm a bit tired, so this report will be short...except I want to talk for a bit. Well, I'll try to be concise.*

Domination scores continue to shift - one of Sullla's warriors has taken a hit from barbarians. I notice that the scores tick up slowly each turn - in an old patch, every 12 gold was worth a domination point, but I thought that that was removed from the score. Nevertheless, something is steadily incrementing the scores upward, and gold seems as plausible a candidate as any. When I'm not so worn out I might do the math on my own score to see where the extra point is coming from. Japper continues his science lead as he finishes a second tech, but it's only two turns ahead of my second tech - I think his quicker growth explains it, unless he's researched an expensive second tier tech with a city-state boost (but I don't think the math on that checks out). No other major changes.

I open the turn and profit from Woden's explorations:

That saves me the trouble of switching to Craftsmanship in a few turns to save culture while awaiting the inspiration. I can crank out a trader in 9 turns with the +4 production I'm getting from my militaristic allies. I'm debating what to build - I had queued a slinger before a builder and another settler, but I'm wondering if, with Woden's cheap slingers on top of the barbarian threat, if I can't go full farmer's gambit and use the city-state bonus to churn out a bunch of economic units first, then training up two more warriors and a trio of slingers for a basic defense/attacking force (depending on the international situation, of course). With starts a bit spread out, I might be able to get away with that and maybe accelerate my growth a little. On the other hand, Ilkum and Colonization won't be available for a while yet, and it's inefficient to build without those policies.

That sort of settles things - at the very least I can build a trader before I hit either the economic policies or Agoge, since nothing boosts trader construction anyway. No inefficiency there!

Scouting report:

A narrow isthmus, and the continent continues west of Valetta. The terrain here is pretty poor - most of the freshwater spots access water or desert tiles in their first ring. A city on the cows might grab some of the hills in the second ring, but they're competing with Valetta for that terrain. Terrain seems to be more attractive in the south, depending on how extensive that desert is. So here's the dilemma - do I continue to plunge eastward, or do I defog that southern area looking for more city-sites? I feel like aggressively scouting might pay off more in the long term, but I'm going to kick myself if there's a natural wonder or something down there. I COULD bring the warrior over after he finishes his escort mission to clear up that area...Or I could go ahead and build the slinger and use it to explore. I dunno. I have a few hours to think about it.

Speaking of my warrior, here's the situation in Trafalgar:

Warrior is ready to escort the settler, while the injured scout retreats towards Kabul. Once Salamis is founded I can definitely help pin that scout in - or probably even detach the warrior en-route, depending on how the geography plays out. Then Woden can kill it for the inspiration.

I grew a pop, but I'll drop immediately next turn when the settler pops out. City borders grow to the horses next turn too - I'd like to pasture the horses, farm the wheat (both so I don't have to keep working the bananas tile and to grab the Irrigation inspiration if Woden hasn't already), and then plantation the silks with the builder I have queued there. That With a 1/3 and a 2/2 tile also available that should take care of the city up to size 5 and two districts.

I'm thinking about my overall naval strategy for this game and how viable it is. I still think it's the best choice, given my civ, but I wanna talk myself through it to see if my logic is sound. I'll do that tomorrow morning, though, it's late now and I'm going to bed. Cheers, all.

I think you should let me handle security and you go farmer's gambit and produce a trader, another settler, and a builder before any military. Then you can run Agoge to get the production bonus. I will have another slinger out in 2 turns, then build another before I go for my first settler. Then will put out a couple more slingers after. That should be enough to handle the current barbs. You could also keep your warrior around to help out and escort you next settler.

You may also want to farm the wheat with a charge from the builder you will buy for the stone. I am going to want to focus on the bottom of the tech tree as much as I can and will only research the top if I waiting for an euerka, so I might not get to irrigation for a while.
Reply

Oh, good, your thinking matches mine. I can use the militaristic bonus to build a buncha units cheaply, and I'll grab the wheat for the irrigation inspiration.

Turn 16

Another late night for me. Family holiday party has me worn out, and the prospect of the drive back across the state in the morning (so's I can be ready to teach again Monday morning) is daunting. I squeezed the turn in, and I'll squeeze this report in, before bed. Lots of minor things, overall a reassuring turn.

My settler popped out on the score report - I wonder if I should have concealed the settler with population growth, but a)it's not like anyone could do anything about it anyway and b)they'll know as soon as I found my second city regardless. Half of the players, including me, have popped their second tech now. I move on to Writing, potentially following up to Currency, but I realized I need to look at what tiles I need to improve, so I may swap out. Minor inefficiency there, but I played the turn at 11:00 at night before going to bed, and I'm an old man, forgive me this oversight.

EDIT: Oh, one last thing I remembered - the domination scores ALSO seem to show heavy barbarian combat by Singaboy/BRick/Sullla, as both players lose about 4 points of domination score. However, I realized that this isn't the only possible explanation. If domination also reflects gold, as I believe it does, it's possible that they're spending money - either rush buying units (unlikely, I don't think anyone could have made enough gold by now, even with gold-producing tiles) or buying tiles for their cities. The latter is quite possible, Sullla did some early tile purchasing in PBEM1 to get his capital up and running. They could also be locked in combat with a city-state instead of barbarians. It's worth keeping an eye on. Fingers crossed for barbs, though - that seems to give them the least profit of any of the possibilities!

An overview of the current situation in the neighborhood:

I keep the warrior alert for the barbarian scout, but he's withdrawn to the south. The settler is 7 turns from Salamis. Looks like I need a quarry, which requires no tech, a mine, which, uh, requires mining, and some plantations - so irrigation. If I swap from Writing to Irrigation next turn, I can finish it by farming the wheat (using the builder out of Trafalgar), which can then plantation the silks. The builder from Salamis can quarry, then mine the copper. I'm thinking about buying the rice tile to farm that for quick growth and get Salamis up and running faster, but then I'm thinking again 'coz I'll have spent all of my gold (not to mention *Woden's* gold) on the builder to begin with! So that plan is out. I'll probably just grab the tea and be okay on amenities for a while (or I can shoot one over to Woden if he grows quickly enough to have problems). Economically, then, the plan remains Operation Pantheon, which is a terrible codename. I'll rename it to Operation Apollodorus, which will throw off anyone without access to Google or a classics degree.

Scouting report:

I decide to send the scout eastward into the potentially expanding continent. My thinking is that if this landmass continues into another players' territory, I want to know that as soon as possible. Any interesting things in the local area can be explored with follow-on units, while getting my scout as deep into the map as possible increases my odds of finding unmet city states, and gives me more big picture map information to plot my strategy. The odds of finding a natural wonder are the same either way. Fortunately, this turns out to be a small peninsula (the land continuing off that single unexplored tile seems spectacularly unlikely). So, I'll backtrack the scout with peace of mind next turn, and start exploring south of lake Malta.

I noted two more potential city sites on the map - Actium, which picks up extra copies of silk and tea to either share with Woden or be sold abroad, and has good production using shared hills with Salamis and good food from shared tiles with Trafalgar, is a good backfill location for later, but I hope to send my second settler to a better spot.

There doesn't seem to be anything good up in the north, but I note a potential little coastal city on the scout's present tile, designated Tsushima for now. It picks up a second jade, and has decent production potential, but wretched food conditions. Also probably backfill. Nubia, meanwhile, can found a city near the southern end of the lake (Actium fits neatly between this spot, Trafalgar, and Salamis), but I need to explore further to pin down the precise site. Hopefully I find some good spots for my own cities south of the lake, or north of Trafalgar.
