Would it help if I made more of a case for Vikings first?

Mining/Fishing is good as it allows us to skip agriculture initially. We can tech AH straight away and that's both our food techs sorted. Furthermore, thanks to fishing, we can get pottery quickly too.

France requires you to get AH and then hunting before getting pottery or heading towards BW. i.e. it's a slower start.

Let's compare UU's:

Musketeers are very decent, but still get destroyed by rifles. The gap between muskets and rifles is not huge at all. I believe their usefulness is limited to an extent.

Berserkers are useless in-and-of themselves but they can be promoted to riflemen to give them the amphibious bonus. This is marginally useful at best generally however potentially very useful if you can control the seas. Sirian doctrine anyone?

UB's:

Salons are worthless.

Navigation 1 is very useful! This gives us a strategic option that the others don't. Furthermore, combine this with aphibious riflemen and it can be truly deadly. If we can get Magellan's too...

Vikings are an extremely good civ generally, but are hampered by their piss poor starting techs. Luckily for us, those techs are particularly decent here.

I'm genuinely curious as your perspective is potentially different from mine own. The same is true to Sommerswerd.
Vikings looking pretty dominant so far. Thanks for the explanations of why Vikings are a strong choice. I am still favoring France for techs and musketeers (draftable 2-move defenders, very useful for both escorting our mounted units and blocking enemy mounted units), but would be happy to have Vikings as well. Consider Vikings my second choice, if we start eliminating the also-rans.
We have FIN (and not SPI), so I just don't foresee us drafting muskets. Why wouldn't we be in bureaucracy or free speech at that point?
Hmm, been busy lately and missed that we've got our starting screenshot already (saw it just now) so I made what I though is sure bet - Agri resource available for improving and roads as nice and always giving job to the worker while we tech the next worker tech.

This paired with my belief that hammam is great and Janisarais are OK, have led me to the Ottomans.

Now after I see the start, hmm...

That makes sense. Ottomans is an easy 'go-to' choice as it's never really a bad pick. If we do end up with Vikings as a majority, we'll likely have a lot of sandboxing going on. For me, it's a good way to take my mind off 'real stuff'. I know i'll certainly be aiming to beat the other simulations...
