The way I understand it, things unfolded a bit differently. Mainly, that the power hungry imperialist Aztecs sought to impugn upon the sphere of influence of our Iroquois brethren, bribing their former allies into war against them. This same 'peace-keeping' force, to which you refer, brutally slaughtered a Persian scouting unit as it sought succor in the city after it's long journey from the lands of the rising sun. The Aztecs are clearly the barbarians here.
