Even then we've had enough inadvertent issues you should ask. In this situation where its a race NO. I'll note this is a prime example of why only moving 1 unit first might be a good idea. If you had moved 1 unit onto the hill you could have held / moved the rest back. Right now it "looks" like you might attack him afterwards, which might cause him to attack you. That and I bet the other city he wanted was Arretium. Lets see how paranoid / bloodthirsty he is.
Q6) Ya settling there is pretty aggressive atm (it is a fine filler site otherwise). 2 east is ok. Antium can take Rome rice and the filler can take Antium rice. Maybe move it there for now but look at my idea 7 and see what you think.
7) this is just a thought, but you could offer a trade of Cumae for Arretium. It gives him another port, but makes the border look MUCH better. I would just ask for lurker input to confirm its ok. I don't think this breaks spirit of 1 city per deal. Its technically 2, but its only 1 per side and its net 0.
Good point, I do look aggressive here.
Never in 1000 years would I have thought about trading cities, it never comes up in SP besides gifting shit cities. That sounds really cool!
Just logged in, looks like xist had city offers on his mind.
I declined and sent the Cumae for Arretium offer.

See Mjmd about paranoid neighbours but also... a roman chariot could snipe it from Cumae for free.
Nah, he's got 2 Cho-ko-nus with him, hard to see them.

The Chinese-Roman War
Bit choppy, but was fun to make. Gg Rickety!
Movements there aren't exact and I'm sure I made more units after DoW, but I would've had to restart to add them in.

Kinda cool.
From pbspy it looks like he didn't take the trade. To avoid being the target if his knights I would be tempted to reoffer the gold trade.

The graphic is a very cool way of showing a Civ 4 war take place.
What is your current tech goal?

Now I'm confused:
He may have been worried about my units outside of Arretium, paranoid that I'd swarm in right after our city swap?
Cumae has 1 Copper and 1 Wheat in it's 2nd ring towards xist, so maybe he's saying he's not going to contest those resources with a bordering city.
Maybe there's an island west of Cumae he doesn't want me to contest?
Whatever the message means - I accepted!
Ahh shit, there were more trades.
We traded Fish for Fish and now he has this offer:
I assume I'm always meant to decline this because it's a message, not a trade, right? (Q2 below) My army isn't in position for that war right now and this message tells me to start moving over there. If I accepted, I think we'd both DoW early, ruining the surprise. I'm hoping this is a general, "Let's fight against coldrain later" message. Hell, I just offered coldrain open borders last turn for peaceful reasons, I want the circumnavigate bonus.

I'm playing a lot of catch up right now. I just finished Monarchy, trying to get Feudalism in the next turn or two so that I can start my GA and swap to Hereditary Rule + Vassalage. After that, I know want Construction, Engineering, Guilds in some order for better army production, but I think my economy/tech is behind everyone else's right now. Compass for Harbors is nice. Or Castles? Then again, if xist and I are going to war soon, I may need Guilds ASAP.
Questions:
(Q1): What do you think adding the Copper/Wheat + 1g to the city swap meant?
(Q2): What's your way of responding to trade messages that are obviously messages, not trades?
(Q3): Do Protective players ever build Castles in MP for the trade route?
(Q4): If I receive a trade offer and exit Diplomacy, can I come back to that trade offer after moving units that turn or is it gone?

Yes, such trade offers are messages and you are not meant to accept them. You can either send back the same offer (which the other player also declines) to signal assent or not send anything back to signal lack of interest or send a revised offer. Unfortunately, trade screens in MP suck and you cannot come back to a trade offer. Clicking on Exit Diplomacy declines the offer, You cannot even review offers you send yourself later in that turn.

Resources are often used to indicate cities.

If you understand and agree, it's customary to mirror it back to signal acceptance.

It varies, but it's not uncommon. It depends on how fast you expect to obsolete them and the value of trade routes

Unfortunaly, no

Nice got the trade.
1) I agree he is trying to indicate something with those resources concerning that city. Wait and find out I guess. If he is giving them to us great. If he is settling a city for them we will find out. That city being behind a river that direction is what makes it a great border city so not too worried. And he did do the trade which is a good sign.
2) Adding some kind of thing the other person wouldn't / can't obviously do is a good way of signalling its not an open trade to be accepted. SD has twice had people accept war trades early ruining the surprise. Mirror back without the negative on your side if you serious (discussing below 5)
3) I sometimes build 1-3 them on my borders as non protective. As protective with stone they are pretty good although internal cities I still sometimes don't, border cities sure. However, see 6 below.
5) I agree overall you need to some time to econ up. So the question is why war now? Is Xist really invading mainland Coldrain territory. From what we know of geography this seems VERY unlikely. He is going to be doing a naval war. YOU get the fun of slogging through culture. So you either have to get to knights fast and whip out an army that is still going to be heavily hampered and focused by Coldrain (I'm pretty sure you wouldn't make progress even with the "2" vs 1. Or you can sit back and get stronger. Agree with fish for fish and you could even offer a long term fish for fish by putting 20g or 30g on each side, but I don't like the idea of going straight into another war. Let them fight each other for a bit. I don't' anticipate either collapsing.
6) For tech path has anyone gotten Theocracy yet? AP is a big deal and if you can hit before end of GA you could switch to Christianity. Its riskier, but there is some pretty big payoff. You don't need vassalage before GA, you can switch sometime during. If you ARE going for knights just to be safe, I recommend choosing most prevalent religion already present in your empire and switching to org religion at the beginning of your GA. I LOVE GA org religion and org religion in general.
