Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

I tried offering Commodore peace, because I saw an opportunity to really hit Thoth hard.

But Comm declined and instead moved a couple knights up to be piecemeal killed off by my pikes.

So instead this is for him:

He just whipped a lot.

Oh, now he wants peace...

If you had given this to me last turn I would have landed on Thoth, not you.

Now...

Scooter asked / practically begged me to stop trading and declare war on Thoth. So maybe I should take Comm's peace deal and go for Thoth? I could have had my siege in position to knock Thoth out as he advances on Yuri's last city.

Nah, we're already here. Let's see what CR3 Trebs can do

Not speaking to the particulars of this decision but I’m a big believer of “accept the peace treaties I offer”  hammer
Peace is non-negotiable

It was more like I offered peace for a reason then. The fact he didn't want to accept until after I landed made me laugh.

Scooters pleas were what gave me pause to accept it, though. But then again, this map has always been for Thoth and I'm tired of fighting the inevitable.

Commodore sent a very convincing series of messages that very clearly said "Take peace and declare war on Thoth or we fight forever". Which you might have gotten the impression was my mindset from my last couple of posts: why bother since I dont' have any discernable edge here? Commodore is either going to grind me down with his superior land, mfg, and knight promotions; or Thoth is going to win while Commodore and I fight things out. I was (and still largely am) resigned to one of those two outcomes.

But I still took peace, because I'm not comfortable throwing to Thoth. Even if I'm resigned to it. I did go so far as to offer Thoth fish+copper for fish+copper - basically saying I'm not going to fight you and help you as much as possible. And I still have the intentions to honor that. Which if you're reading closely you're probably saying "Wtf? How do the first and second paragraphs here even remotely work together?"

What is my edge? Technology. And it's a short edge. There was one way I thought to leverage that and that was war. That didn't work out too well. There's a second way to leverage it: infrastructure. So I have no intention of declaring on Thoth, and while I am going to send all the signals to Commodore I can to keep him from engaging in a forever-war with me, I do not plan on attacking Thoth. Well, maybe a little. We'll see how the winds blow.

I whipped infrastructure in a lot of cities this turn.

And as soon as I can I'll switch back into serfdom & bureau.

Comm might have the winning play with Caste & Workshops. I'm going to have to try to leverage Serfdom with Farms, Windmills & Watermills because my food sucks.

I also need to improve these demos.

Commodore & Scooter both got Astronomy this turn. I am finishing up Guilds and then need to decide just how I can convert Liberalism.

This game is over.

I've got Scooter demanding I declare war on Thoth while he lets Commodore take his cities unopposed. I can't tell if he just doesn't have enough to defend or if he's throwing to Comm.

I responded by demanding scooter's gold.

Happy to sim city this out and then throw against the first one of the two to attack me. Playing for second place I guess ha

Here's a thought from playing both this and PB74 where we're relatively in the same technology in the game despite different circumstances:

You need a large map to fully appreciate the movement of units in this era. In a map like this everything is too close together and there's no room for maneuvering or battlefield strategy. Everything can be covered with 6-move galleons with units on board. But I'm a large map maneuvers can still take multiple turns to unfold. Units can be caught more out of position. It's not possible to defend everything at once (or rather, it's harder), and it makes things more interesting.

Unlike here, where the game basically has boiled down to More Promotions smash Less Promotions.

The problem with large maps is having too many cities to manage. Something I tried to solve in 75 by spacing out bonus resources more in the map for 75 - but I think I largely failed and future maps could look at a more concentrated lushness near civ starts and spacing bonus tiles out more the farther away you get.

Anyway, just rambling and finding something to post while Thoth and Commodore sort out who wins this.
