Pirates doing Diplomacy?

Weird, it doesn't look like we've sent the message yet. I'll send (resend?) it.

I sent the message to m3 from my own account. You can resend it from the team account if you want, though.

We have a reply!

Quote:Pirates,

We are happy with this proposed agreement in principle; there are just
a couple details we'd like to work out. We wouldn't actually mind if
you settled a city 1NW or 1W, 1NW of the horses above Talking Parrot
in order to gain your own native supply. On the other hand, we are a
bit concerned about the proposed border cutting us off from access to
the centre of the map below the lake. How about this (see below)?
Instead of a neutral zone, the purple line shows the maximum
harvesting radius of any cities settled on the frontier. This
clarifies things a little more, and still ensures we don't crowd each
other!

P.S. We got your original message too, it just took us three days to
discuss amongst ourselves! I'm sorry we're always so slow with diplo.

I don't see much of an issue with this proposal. I think it gives us more land anyways, since we probably wouldn't be able to settle M3's side of the lake. Only slight problem is that Talking Parrot will force us to spread our defences along a wide front, and that horse city will be almost undefendable.

I think that we can agree to this. Rather than placing our next city 3S of Barbados we can move it 1 more SE to the hill indicated (and actually that is probably a better position anyway). When I get back over the weekend I'll take a longer look at drafting a dotmap for the next 3-4 cities. The only problem I foresee long-term is potentially in who gets to claim the lake ... The first person to plant on "our" respective side? Do they get it all because it's technically below their line, so we have to plant at least 2 tiles east of the lake?

About Horses ... I honestly don't think we will have a problem getting them from our eastern front evetually, and since we are not planning on war in the near future and barbarians are off we shouldn't need horses until at least knights or later.

Lets take peace, NAP to turn 100, and see if we can pull this back together.

That's reasonably close to what I was hoping we could get with a "raze Tortuga" plan, so I think it's doable. I'm not worried about defending the Horses City (if necessary it can be lost, there's backup sources); I just don't like the idea of having to wait so damn long. smile Eventually we'll have a backup source and then it won't be an issue.

There's also Corn near that cows site - which is actually first-ring to that suggested location (directly SE of the indicated tile). Which makes it a rather awesome site. Likewise, there's a Fish that would support the horse city. So neither of them are bad sites. Horse City isn't defensible by road, but could be reinforced by sea if it comes to that.

I assume the lake is being used as a natural border. Or, IOW, no need for formal line-drawing; cultural borders will determine that one. (Mostly because that benefits them as they're closer to the lake and so can get established earlier, while we'd have to do that by streeetching.

My sole objection is that they're still talking about a "neutral zone" to Parrot's east. I'm more concerned about how close that border is to our capital city. At this point, though, I don't think that can be helped. Grargh.

Basically seems doable overall.

Just for ease of viewing...
As I understand this proposal, BFCs shouldn't cross the purple line. (Cultural borders ostensibly could, but not BFCs). Therefore, there's an implicit "no settlement zone", diagrammed as follows (please pardon my use of an old stitch for the maps):

Basically, No Cities Allowed In The Shaded Red Area.

Hopefully this helps show the possibilities.

I'll look at that peace settlement in a bit, but for now we have a message from Gillette:
Quote:Avast there Pirates,

We Vikings are as fond of the high seas as yourselves, so I'm sure we'll have much in common, such as joy at your revenge plans...

First let me apologize for the delay replying, with so little going on for us at the moment we've let things slip a little. It sounds like everyone else has been enjoying interesting times though - I think TEAM and Trolls are now at peace again, which could be a problem for us as Trolls have had a good start.

You're nearly right with our position. Our capital is directly south of the warrior you saw. We are SSE of M3, who our warrior is now going to snoop around. He might come and visit you in the fullness of time, but only to unfog trade routes, bring you fresh fish and tales of our fine Norse Gods!

Speaking of gods we have discovered a round orange one, I'm sure in time you'd like to see some literature and learn the Good News that belief in Him brings. If so I imagine we can work something out.

Anyway, good luck with your angry neighbours and your other angry neighbours, we honestly hope you give them a good keelhauling!

I think we should put our city a bit closer to the river and settle the border later. But definitely take this peace.

Send of a short message saying 'We accept your generous offer'?

Since M3 is a mutual problem, Gillette ought to know that we're going for peace for now.

Would also be tempted to propose a screenshots swap (though that may be my Exploration Greed™ shining through wink ). And would it be prudent to mention our supposition w/r/t TEAM (city-for-peace)?

I sent off a message to M3 seeing if they are clear with the chart, Viqsi.

Proposed response:
Quote:Gillette:
The interesting times are over for us; we sold Tortuga (now Talking Parrot) to M3 for peace and an NAP until T100. We're still ironing out the last details of the border agreement.

As for Buddhism, we aren't interested right now. We'll keep your offer in mind, though.
