Epic Forty-two: Summer Breeze - Reports

T-hawk, thanks for the kind words and response.

That's what I worried too, and I did upload a bunch of pictures. So if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. Alternatively, I could post the whole story on CFC? How is that idea? smile

Quote:Looks like you did find one side-effect of delaying the AI contacts.

Indeed. And the irony is, if they were not coming to attack me, they might not contact each other at all! lol

About the blockade to Greece: Kylearan apparently did that too.

Thanks for a good game!

Oh forget to mention, I updated the report to only include the happy citizen score. The final point is 1055.5.

I did get the free tech. In a bit of smoke we took currency hoping to trade it for for CoL. Which didn't work, since I couldn't get a trade.

In hindsight I should have tried the writing=>CoL=>philosophy gambit, but was afraid the AI would get philosophy first given the $$$ that had to go to the party fund.

Microbe probably beat me, but so what. We had fun with the Rum, Rasta and Reggae. smoke

Haha, wow, reading Bugsy's and Kylearan's reports, I certainly learned a lot. Man, what kind of pot was I smoking? I mean, I knew I was planning on expanding quickly... but I was dumb enough to not build the Pyramids or create blockades... I guess it isn't too bad for my first Epic, and considering that there were about... 7 or 8 wars and that I still have a lot to learn about different things. Gotta say thanks for the cool Epic.

Heres a link to my report: http://www.geocities.com/lawlam_00/RBCiv_Epic42.html

(By the way, as I gawped at the other's score..... I was amazed at how much there is still to learn and discover in this game. Hope another Epic is placed up soon, because I am eager to try another one)

Here's my report, had a (mostly) relaxing game, with a few frustrating moments. All in all, a nice dose of Civ for the summer!

Now I can go read all the other summer show-and-tells! B)

Very nice game. Definitely a better strategy in terms of the land grab, I think I let the 'vacation' attitude get to me too much, and was willing to settle for what was offered, expanding rapidly but not as methodically. Blocking the Greeks in early was a good move. I also especially liked the analysis of the fresh water north vs. dry south, I noticed that too late, when I already had a ton of mines around those cities. I also re-routed a few workers once electricity hit, as they were railing, and was able to irrigate a few more tiles, but it was quite a bit later.

I'm curious about your tech pace, you flew through the ancient age, while I let it drag on (I had build the Great Library, and mistakenly dind't try to hurry the tech pace). Also, I had a very backwards Greece, who I had to lift into the Middle Ages. You entered the Middle ages in 270BC, my game didn't see Currency until 360AD. Yet we both entered the Industrial ages around the same time (1210AD vs 1250). The tech pace in the Middle Ages flew, and I was struggling to keep up, yet you had and maintained a lead, but the pace slowed down. Any thoughts? Were you doing anyting to slow the pace down? Other than your (short?) war with France, were there a lot of other wars?

I also think you definitely were right to beeline for Sanitation. That translated into a big boost to your score, I'm sure. I went for Steam first, but then got lacksidasical, and didn't get Sanitation until 1455, so I had far fewer turns to enjoy the added population. All told, a great game, and thanks for sharing your explanation of your strategy!

Great report! Sounds like you had a lot of fun with this game!

It's erie how closely your initial expansion matched mine, even many of the same city names in the same places (Santo Domingo for the FP site, etc.). I also had that same view of the warrior inside Alex's borders, and when I finally did meet him, his worker was parked in his capital, so I'm sure that slowed him down. You did have more wars, but also got a few 'reach' cities on the other continents that I didn't. Good game!

Welcome to RBCiv, Microbe! smile

Good game, and especially a good report for a first Epic! Like T-hawk mentioned, managing the AI contacts was a good strategy, I wish I'd thought that far ahead! It looks like you got Sanitation even later than I did, but your early expansion was more than enough to give you the foundation for a good score. Good job!

Hi,

the fast ancient age tech pace I can explain: While I concentrated on getting republic, my AIs had decided to research construction before writing - something I don't see very often. So once philosophy was secured, I was able to trade away my monopoly techs (writing, CoL, philo) for construction, currency etc. (Another idea for AI improvement would be that AIs should know about the world form, and prioritize different techs accordingly: Map making for archipelagos, for example...)
My Greece was very backwards as well, by the way.

What happened in my middle ages is more difficult to explain. While on the one hand I wanted a fast tech pace to get to hospitals ASAP, on the other hand I had a very weak military and a very long expansion phase (until 690AD!wink and thus decided not to gift techs away, to avoid having to face stronger units in case war would break out. Additionally, contacts between AIs were established very late, while my cities were busy producing settlers and had no time to build libraries or to grow, so that probably explains the slow-down.

Later, after my expansion phase, I focused on growth and research (beelining to universities, for example), so the pace picked up speed again. I had a 5 turn research cycle through the industrial age, which I found astonishing considering the 50% lux rule...

As far as I recall, there hadn't been any major wars that could have slowed down the tech pace. Besides my war against the French and the later war between England and India, there had been one phony pre-MM war between I-forgot-who and me I had forgotten to mention in my report (no need to cave in to a threat when no galleys are known yet, right? smile ) and one medium-length AI-AI war, and that was it.

Quote:I went for Steam first, but then got lacksidasical

 What does 'lacksidasical' mean? I tried to look it up in three different dictionaries without success, and in case it's a typo, I have no idea how it might be spelled correctly...
