Hey Sirp! Good to see you.
I hear where you're coming from on all of this. Can't really argue with your conclusions.
Civ3 did some new things I really liked. I got well over a year out of fun times out of it. I think the fair measurement of a game is whether or not you had good clean fun with it or were unhappy with it all the way through. MOO3... I was unhappy all the way through. Civ3 and GalCiv were great fun, by contrast, and I simply outgrew them eventually. I would recommend either game to new players, with the advice to avoid reading too many "tips and tricks" lest they shorten the enjoyable lifespan of these games. "Avoid the spoilers" as it were. If you wouldn't spoil an adventure game by reading about the story before you play, don't spoil a strategy game by reading about the AI and its ins and outs before you play.
As for Civ4... the only fair thing to do is wait and see. Firaxis doesn't appear to be engaging in Blizzard style hype, and the game is not due out soon, so probably best not to dwell on it much. Otherwise we'll work ourselves into a lather that no game could possibly measure up to.

I was talking with somebody I know. Wont say who. Much good is in the works for CivIV.
The only thing I know of so far is the map view may no longer be flat. They are, from what I understand, working on an actual globe based design.
Much buzz in beta tester circles there is.
You didn't hear it from me.

We're going to try a fusion event of SG-Epic of some sort. Kylearan's going to sponsor, and this is actually the next item on the schedule. Here's hoping folks have a good time with Ports Your Goal first.
What is the near future of Epics ? Can we expect some games, even if they look similar to other ones in the past ? Remember many players here are not so old, and haven't played the first years. I for one will to continue well-designed solo games, and I count on the Epic competition for that. I'm not well into SGs but that's personal.

For armies, if they were changed into ueber units instead of fillable units, how would they AI react to them. (note -- remove their massive hp, MGL upgrade into them, new kinds unlocked at certain techs ect.)

Very intresting post, giving some insigth what went on during the developmet of C3C. Now that I've finally been able to play it, I have to say I totally agree, and I'd like to add another poit:
12) The new industrial time techs particulary fascism screved up the AI science, when entering the industrial age. Since the AI valuates gov't enabling tech's very hig, it practically allways follows the nationalism - communism - facism route (and sometimes does the democracy on the side). Meanwhile the human player can take economy/production boost of by steam, industry, corp, sanitation and/or military outpower the AI with rails and artillery.
Since I got C3C, I have not played a single basic RND map game that lasted until the modern times. If I survive until the beginning of industrial, I cannot loose.
I would not have high hopes for civ4, if they let the marketing department continue to lead the desing. "The corruption is annoying most the players, lets get rid of it".

I'm actually fairly optimistic about Civ4, simply because Soren Johnson is in charge of the overall project and my contact with him in the past was always very positive. As some of you may know, Soren did all the AI programming for Civ3. What you might not know is that during the Conquests Beta test, BreakAway Games managed to screw up the AI so badly that Soren had to be called in to fix things. I still have some email messages saved from when Soren asked me to help point out where the developers had messed with his programming. So - I think we may see good things down the road, but it's way too early to tell one way or another. I suspect we'll hear more throughout the course of 2005.
On an unrelated note, I found my Conquests Beta CD this weekend when visiting my parents' house. :hat: Been looking for that thing for over a year now. Useless of course at present, but it does have sentimental value.
