Duelers please post here

I want this to work out, but based on the speed at which things are moving, my hopes are not too high. I would suggest that we either try to get things started ASAP or table this project until a time when more interested parties are available.

We need just one more player to form 2 groups of 4 players and start the qualification stage.

I repeat my suggestion about a FIFA World Cup type of tournament - everyone plays everyone in the groups, then the semi-final pairs are made, then final.

I have even made an excel sheet to automate things smile

We will need someone to make the RNG thing though.

Sounds good?

We lose more duelist sign-ups everytime someone asks for them, probably because not everyone is regularly checking two different threads to see what the current "league" status is. There really needs to be one or a few people appointed specifically to organize this on at least a basic level, and it would help if they sent out PMs to people like TT and Catwalk who initially expressed interest, but have since fallen silent.

I thought we had a couple of posters agree to help do some basic organizing for us in the old duel thread, but nobody has taken the initiative to do anything since. It would really help if the second duel thread was actually moved to this forum.

I can do this. I'll PM TT and Catwalk. I can also go through the last thread and determine what the general consensus was for games and write up the official plan if you guys are ok with that.

Edit: PM's have been sent to TT and Catwalk

Alright this is my suggested tournament settings/format.

First, we need a "Tournament Administrator." The job would be pretty light, but we need one impartial lurker that gets complete authority on settling disputes if necessary, and we all agree in advance to follow those rulings. If you are interested in this role, please volunteer. We may not necessarily take the first volunteer only because the Admin role could potentially have a tough decision or two (hopefully that won't happen), in which case it's probably better if one of our more "veteran" members made that choice.

League Format Wrote:1. 8 players split into 2 divisions. Administrator tries to split the divisions relatively evenly so one isn't "stacked" or anything if at all possible.
2. Each division has round-robin play.
3. Top 2 players from each division advance to semi-finals - 1st from each divisions plays 2nd from the other divison.

Game Format Wrote:1. Matches should be completed in 1 month maximum.
2. In the event that a match is not complete after 1 month, the following criteria should be used. Administrator is decision-maker in all these cases.
2a) If there is a clear leader, that player shall be declared winner.
2b) If there is no clear leader, but one player has had extended unexpected absences that has caused the game to slow down and not complete in one month, then the other player shall be declared winner. No "sand-bagging" the save to make sure the other player cannot catch up before the month is up.
2c) If the game is too close to call, the players will be given a 7 turn extension with the Admin giving the exact turn deadline. The score leader at the end of that turn will be the winner. If it's somehow tied after that, there will be rolling 1T extensions until the tie is broken.
3) Each player will PM the admin with his civ/leader choice for the game. Duplicates will be allowed. However, once a player has chosen a particular trait or civ, he cannot choose it again. This "banned list" resets after pool play is over, so for semifinals/finals the player can choose anything again.

Here are the default settings for a game. If the two players in the match would like something different than this (era, script, etc), they must both agree on the change, otherwise these settings are the default. For example, if players have a different script they'd like to play, that's fine, so long as the map is mirrored and they both agree on it.

Default Game Settings Wrote:1. Ancient Start
2. Tiny Map size
3. Mirrored Map that's been touched up by a lurker/administrator if necessary (prevents the almost-no-food mirrored maps). Default will be the mirrored map Speaker referenced (http://realmsbeyond.net/forums/showpost....stcount=19).
4. Quick Speed

Alright, I'd like everyone to carefully read all of these and give a yay/nay vote. If there are any particular points you'd like changed, please note those and we can discuss them. The only real controversial point may be Game Format rule 2B. Ideally that rule will never be enforced, but the idea is that if the game is close but one player has been exceptionally slow on moving the save, it's not really fair to the timely player who might be a tiny bit behind but hasn't had ample time to catch up due to the other player being very slow. I do not expect anyone to actually "sandbag" the save to maintain their lead - but just in case, do NOT do that. Play fairly and in good faith.

I like the proposed format (2 groups of 4 and 1 month matches), so I'll go ahead and sign up for good this time. I agree with the rules for calling the game, provided a good administrator can be located. Maybe advertise for one in Civ General?

Did we lose the "no repeat traits or civs" rule, though?

Sounds very good to me.

I can only add that all 3 games from the qualification can be played at the same time - i.e. if players prefer they play via PBEM, then the players play 3 PBEMs each day, if players can play online at the lobby, then it is matter of availability - anyone can announce if he is available for the nights/weekend and matches can be appointed. Also that groups can be made by geographic principle - people in closer time zones be put together to have better online time together.

Game Format Rule 3. I suggested a "no repeats" that gets wiped out after pool play so if you make it to the Final 4, your ban list starts over at 0. (But again, you cannot use your semi-final choice in the final)

I was thinking about this. I would say yes, all 3 COULD be played at the same time, but I hesitate to force people only because it could make it harder for some to hit the 1 month deadline.

Alternative suggestion: new game starts every 2 weeks. So something like:

Day 1: Each player starts one game
1/2 month: Each player starts second game
1 month: Game 1 must be over. Each player starts third game.
1 1/2 month: Game 2 must be over.
2 month: Game 3 must be over.

This would allow us to finish pool play in 2 months. 2 games at once isn't as big a commitment if one of them is in the "early" stages. It's a bigger deal if you're running 3 games at once and all of them are in the late stages where the turns are longer.

There it is, my bad. It all looks good to me. I rather like the ban list not being reset, would force players to economise with their picks. Good players who have a shot at the semi finals may want to pick lesser leaders and civs against lesser players whom they expect to beat, thereby giving lesser players a bit more of a chance to win a few games. I'm fine with the implementation, though.

EDIT about time frames:
I'd prefer sticking with 1 month per game. That allows pool games to be completed in 3 months, with the final completing in 5 months. That's a pretty decent pace. I might have a hard time playing multiple turns a day in more than one game along with my obligations in PBEM29g.
