To quickly summarize the AI's tactical problem. The AI designates each fighting unit as offense or city defense and this is inflexible. A single barb warrior can walk up to a city guarded by two archers, and the AI will not move either archer to intercept the warrior, because the archers are both city defense. The AI needs to find an offense unit and send it over to kill the warrior. The warrior thus has his way with the AI's terrain improvements - quite needlessly.

Since only a subset of the AI's units are "allowed" to fight barbs, it's important that they usually win, otherwise the AI will run out of offense units and be doomed to forever huddle in his cities, every offense unit trained getting promptly destroyed.

Meanwhile even the thickest human player alive (ie breathing) can use 100% of his units to counter the barb menace, there's no hard-coding preventing a human from using half of his units.

It isn't fair that the AI gets to use their bonus when attacking barb cities, but that's a more specific issue.

looks good, I like partnering with the AI. All of the options that are available for directing your "partner" are really nice. I got a feeling that a lot of work went into things like the "attack ______ city" commands that you can give your AI partner. I also like the sharing of resources etc. I will play this one BTW.

Question:

Would running a 'simulator run,' same settings, be considered illegal?

Not if you complete it before starting this event. Running "test cases" simultaneously is something I would have to give more thought to. It's not currently against the rules, but not a situation we've ever dealt with.

Basically, there's nothing wrong with "having experience" playing similar games. However, once you know specifics about an event, it's not exactly the mainstream path to pause in the middle to try to figure out specific game mechanics. If you're surprised by something, I would hope you view as an interesting challenge to puzzle over rather than something you always want to understand completely before you engage with it.

Did that make sense? smile

Yes it did. (EDIT: Let the following clause be stricken from the record) Let me demonstrate my understanding by paraphrasing what you said, (Resume record) and informing you more correctly of the situation.

I decided to test the premise of the game out, by mimicking the settings, both given and hidden in the game (use of F9)... After finding out these settings, I arranged a test game following them as closely as possible.

The reason I did this was because there was at least one setting with which I had NO experience (which is Quick speed).

Thus, it was not an attempt to subvert game play, by neglecting to discover challenges. It was an attempt to discover just how fast 'quick' speed is.

And it is very, very fast.

Thanks for telling me that I am indeed not wrong for doing this.

P.S. I stopped the test after I got to 2000 BC.

I am almost done with this adventure and want to thank Sirian for making it so fun. Having Toku as your teammate presents a unique set of challenges. At least... [this will have to wait until reporting time smile ]

An advice for those who are unfamiliar with teamed interface: if you select "Let's discuss something else" option, you can tell your ally what to research [works very well] and what city to attack [hard to tell how well this works]. You can also open city screens for ally's cities to see how they are managing them. Any wonder either of you builds or captures has an effect on both civs.

Watching Toku in this game gave me a much better understanding of how AI works (and why it seems so ineffective during AI-AI wars), but these thoughts should probably wait until reporting time.

I hope some experts play this game, so I'll be able to learn from you as much as I learned in Adventure 2.
