No long term hard feelings towards gav, but that was what prompted me to post in the tech thread as i was basically wanting out of the game at that point. It felt awful having the game leader stop 2 insignificant players war.

I still dont quite understand why Gavagai did what he did

1) At that moment I was planning an invasion into Piccy's northern lands and Greenline's culture was tactically important to limit his ability to move units around. As a matter of fact, I even considered liberating some of Piccy's cities back to Greenline to take advantage of pushing Piccy away with a hostile culture (didn't go with that plan in the end). For a full disclosure, it didn't really matter in the end as Piccadilly chose not to engage me but at that moment I've been preparing for a serious fight in the northern territories, so I wanted every tactical advantage I could get.
2) I wanted Greenland for myself later and I wanted it to be unspoiled. Your invasion would trigger population and infrastructure loss from captures/whipping - something I would rather avoid if I could. I don't get why you think my second reason somehow invalidates the first one. I invaded Greenline after I took Piccadilly's northern cities and he outlived his usefulness (no more need for tactical advantages). That was always the plan. Before that moment, however, I very much wanted him alive and being a complication for Piccy.

I mean, there wasnt much else for me to do that game. 1-2 generations of military/tech behind all neighbors. Might as well invade the only one im at parity with.
