I don't think it's a Moby Dick thing at all. I think Dreylin is quite conscious of the fact that he's playing a sub-par strategy to win but a good strategy to find maximum enjoyment out of the game. IMHO if Dreylin can kill his 2 neighbors, both who wronged him in game, and then at least contest victory that would probably be more satisfying than winning while MH can just hang out alive.
I don't think it's a spoiler (well it can't be one since I'm playing) to say a lot of RBP1 decisions at this point aren't based around optimal paths to win the game.
