Great work bringing us home! (Where we're safe from all those horrible encounters with strangers!) Yes, we had a bit of luck a couple times when we needed, but that still felt really well earned: A terrific turn-around!

In this circumstance though, not even allowed to ask for peace, nor to try to steal tech, nor to (etc) and about to lose half our empire ... well, we can keep holding on as long as we can, but I don't expect to come back in this one.

The AIs made just enough mistakes, with just enough little breaks going our way, for us to squeak by after all and get the tech we needed, with some really solid play and a bit of creativity, to turn what looked like a certain loss into a satisfying win! Congratulations, everybody!

Dunno how my schedule's going to hold up - big changes are coming for me in the next couple of weeks - but there were some interesting ideas suggested around the time of those quotes I posted, and I'd kind of like to try out SDragon's patch update and/or 1oom. Anyone up for another game?

I guess it's worth bearing in mind the AI's ability to spend all its production on endless, pointless warrring if the powers are in balance; if the human player can stay on the edge of the whirlwind there's always a chance.
And yep, the luck of the Meklar peaceing out, meaning that we kept OnceUponACat, was a justified reward for all the hard work, IMO .
Haha, most of my impossible games are in these conditions...

I'm interested in another game. Have to say that favour a more "standard" gameplay myself right now - I assume we're moving to impossible and I'm badly out of practice - although some flavour never hurts.

Sounds good; I think we have the makings of a team then! As for the game/variant, I remembered this from earlier in the thread:
(May 12th, 2020, 16:04)shallow_thought Wrote: A little bit of flavour does no harm though. How about reversing the variant? Say Klackons, Impossible, but we have to accept trades? In fact, so long as we have contact, each player must make a tech trade on their first turn if they can, accepting whatever is offered (that is, you can pick which races to try, in which order, and which of their techs you like, but as you must accept one their suggested techs in return). Also, you must accept any other trade offers, or NAP offers. Peace/war/breaking treaties is left normal.
I'm tempted to call it "over-friendly bugs" :mischief: .
To formalize that:
Overly-Friendly Bugs
Klackons
Medium
Impossible
5 Opponents
Variant rules:
1) You must make every effort to complete a tech exchange as early as possible in each of your turn sets, choosing something from among the first set of techs you see on offer, no matter the price! (After the first exchange of your set you can handle tech exchanges however you normally would.)
2) Any time an AI requests a trade agreement or a Non-Aggression Pact during the interturn, you must agree! (You needn't accept Peace, War, or Alliance requests however: We're only over-friendly to those who aren't fighting us and aren't trying to turn us into somebody's enemy!)
What do you guys think? Shall we roll with that?

Is that "one tech exchange per turn set" or "one tech exchange per friendly AI per turn set"?
I think that's a good variant set either way - Klackons are definitely the on-ramp to playing Impossible, so playing them with a modest downside seems appropriate.

I had the former in mind - the player gets to decide which AI to try first each time, and once they've made one exchange, the rule is satisfied.
