I agree that the rivers looked really bad. Especially compared to the rest of the scenery, the rivers looked really out of place.
edit: I didn't see the auto-swap thing. I wonder if you can chain it? Probably not as it could be pretty broken

Huh, really?
The only really new thing in the video was the apparently not-that-great combat AI, which kept suiciding against his trebuchet. Pretty much everything else has already been clear from scripted demo videos and preview articles.
Not saying it's bad - the game looks absolutely awesome to me - but this demo didn't help with that!

Well i guess i haven't been paying a ton of attention then, because a bunch of stuff was new to me. But I wouldn't say the AI was suiciding against the treb, it had just been setup in a good choke point. One thing you could complain about is the fact that Napoleon for some reason didn't transport troops over the red sea.

I missed it . I can't imagine a terrain advantage that would make a trebuchet a good defender...

Darrell, you can still watch it if you like.

(See the recorded videos near the bottom.)
About the trebuchet, it was basically parked in Egypt in an Earth-type map and kept shooting at units that tried to squeeze in through the choke point from the middle east. It was ridiculously well-promoted, with a ton of damage increase promotions, march (healing while doing stuff) and Logistics (basically bllitz, letting it attack twice a turn, which was just about enough to kill a unit every turn) by the end. Greg always kept a unit in front of it to protect it, and a great general behind it for a combat bonus to both. I'm pretty sure he was playing well there.
Someone pointed out on civfanatics that the AI he was fighting, Napoleon, actually conquered one or two other AIs while attacking Greg. So maybe my comments about its tactical mismanagement were wrong, and it just wasn't focusing many forces there. (He was playing on Immortal and Napoleon had 4 times his score.)

A few comments though:
- Although played on a fast machine, it took quite a while for the turns to flip, even the very first ones.
- I am not at all impressed by the new graphics. Apparently the stream game was played on highest graphics settings. The rivers just looked awful. But then I dont care much about fancy graphics anyway.
- Loved the strategic view. Kind of feels like "Settlers of Catan" (not sure that is known outside of Germany?)
- I am a bit worried about those powerful huts. Especially popping a hut (ancient ruin) that gives you another pop point in your city on turn 10 (or so) can be quite game breaking, I guess. Also a free upgrade from a warrior to a spearman on turn 5, even when you are two techs away from Spears, just does not feel right. Hopefully huts can be switched off.
- I saw that your own units can instant-swap position. Which gets quite important in one tile passages and when you want to overtake a slower unit. BUt what about you got stuck with an AI unit in a long 1 tile stretch?

Don't worry about the huts, from the advanced game set-up it was evident that it is possible to "turn off ancient ruins" i.e. no huts Generally looked like the options when starting a new game a very similar to what we are used to from Civ4

How long between game available and first event?
It appears that Epic 1 opened about a month after release. Cuban Isolationists opened two days after release? Wow.

We can always have an event based on the demo, I guess.

early game and late game recordings are up Basically, for those who don't know, they started playing from the beginning and then halfway through switched to a later save of another game to show some cool stuff. 2nd part is a must see imo.

Demo's out on game release date, isn't it? Can't remember off the top of my head if that's US release or worldwide release, but those are only 3 days different iirc.
Spotted the big PRELOAD button on my steam library last night, it's nearly time!
