[PB59] Pindicator's One Thread to Rule Them All

Hey Lewwyn, can I pick to reroll the civ and still keep the choice of these two leaders? Or do I need to pick a leader to lock in so the other one goes back into the pool? If it's allowed I'd like to keep my choice of the two leaders and only reroll the civ and then make a decision on civ/leader again goign into the next round. If that's not allowed I get it.

Yeah, you'll have to make a choice between the leaders if you want one. Whatever you don't pick goes back in the pool for everyone rerolling.

Keep Lincoln

Sadly the Dutch don't really do it for me. The game has a good chance to be over before any of their shiny things are available, and in a big game like this where victory is less likely the reward of good play and more the providence of good luck I'd rather play something with earlier UUs and UBs.

So with leaders, Bismarck seemed like the better of the two leaders initially, except a few points come against when I considered him closer. First of all, IND is not a great leader bonus when 3-5 other players are also likely to be IND. Second, Expansive losing its worker boost kind of kicks that trait down a peg - although it does still keep the best part of the trait: half-priced granaries. This is still a solid pairing: half priced granaries and forges. In fact, if you're going for the win then it probably is the correct play here to pick Bismarck and hope for a better civ on reroll. Even as I'm typing this I'm getting tempted all over again. But I also feel like these are traits that I've played among the most here, and I do like variety.

With Lincoln, I've been intrigued by CHM's half-priced monuments addition. Also, I like that we have no visible happiness resources. (Don't pull a Noble on my, Lewwyn!) CHM could indeed be very strong if resources are scattered a bit more. My guess is with a huge map he is not the madman to draw the whole thing by hand and will go for a more natural (meaning less lush) luxury distribution than traditionally what we find in RB games. But I think CHM is a very solid trait for economy, for warring, and now it has a cheap way of popping borders. I've never gotten to play CtH CHM and I am jumping at the opportunity. Philosophical is a rougher spot. I think everybody agrees that it needs more of a boost but nobody can decide what that boost should be. I'm going to see what I can do with it. I don't think I'm going to try for a hair-brained scheme like PB7 where I bulbed Machinery and Engineering with my first two Great Scientists - I'm going to want Fishing for this start - but I would like to try bulbing ahead to key techs like Education, Chemistry, and possibly others. This is going to require some planning on my part, though my time is not as free as it once was.

Sadly Astronomy has been changed in CtH, otherwise I would have given some thought to Lincoln of the Dutch ...

Wait, Astronomy has not been changed in CtH? There is no Code of Laws or Paper requirement like there is in RtR?

Seriously? I swore I saw Charriu talking about doing exactly that!

Huh... well, now there's a path to India Dutchmen before the game is over. Guys, I kind of want to do this. I've never done it before and exploring new combinations for me is what really scratches my gaming itch. Especially if they are bad combinations. lol

Our early game is going to be awful but at least we have cheap monuments!

Let's dust these lists off. I feel I will be needing them:

It doesn't take all that much time given that you guys said you only wanted 20 land tiles per player. Huge swaths of unrelieved Ocean are fast to do.

Thinking more about game settings, Huge/Emperor is a bit of a blessing for this combination, and suddenly CHM/PHI doesn't seem quite so bad a decision.  CHM looks good now because instead of cities capped at size 3/4 (after elephant) we will be able to go up to size 5/6 quite early on.  The capital in particular (wherever I end up putting it) will be able to grow early onto cottages.  Indeed, I'm already leaning towards planting on top of the sugar over the plains hill as I will have a lot more room to grow into early on.  Hunting > Mining > BW seems an appropriate way to start, although I may want to consider Pottery ahead of BW just to get an earlier start on cottages.  Riskier opening but at the same time in these large games you need to take a little more risk to hope for a good position later in the game.

PHI also will shine a bit more with the higher costs.  Astronomy is no longer in the 1.5 bulb range but at 3,800 beakers will be worth a full 2 bulbs.  An early Academy will do wonders to help with the early tech costs, and especially for such a long game.  Generating 6 great people early on is what is bubbling around my head right now:  1 Academy, 1 Golden Age, 2 for Astronomy, and 2 for Education (aiming for an early Oxford).  I don't have any plans to get an early religion - although I could see a line where I get it through Philosophy or Code of Laws and then need to figure out how to get a Prophet.

Not to say we will have our challenges.  Monuments will be the only discounted building (sorry Coliseum, without War Weariness I don't think we'll be building any of you).  Everything will be full cost.  Hammers will be hard to come by and so I think wonders will need to be off the table unless we can find a specific use for them.  The early library will undoubtably be painful and cost a settler, but should hopefully pay for itself with the fast Academy.  In fact, we may end up being a little smaller than our neighbors - and this will in turn make me want to push for conquest in the Classical Era.  Horchers are back on the menu, boys?
