TheArchduke finally does not play the current Civ as well

Can you remind me why keeping the city isn't automatically the right choice? My Civ6 mechanics are really rusty. What are the advantages and drawbacks of keeping it?

Loyalty is a very dangerous beast. Either you struggle against it with a governor or you ignore it and reconquer the city at a later date.

I will opt for the 2nd.

Turn 50

Moscow falls and is renamed bringing my culture into an acceptable range. I also establish a monument back home to push EE. I can not rely on another attack working out. I need to boom and choke Arabia at the same time.

Russia has lost 2 warriors and 1 slinger will not be able to upgrade. I hope that he keeps stumbling through his defense with archers sitting at the front. Hopefully he keeps this up, instead of establishing a fortified position.

People REALLY underestimate terrain bonuses. You can fight Elephants or Eagle Warriors with Warriors. But you gotta fortify and use the terrain to your advantage. Civilization VI offers a real wealth of possibilities for the smart defender.

Moscow was defendible. Just offer 2 avenues of attack, 2 warriors and 2 archers could easily hold it and threaten my flank. St. Petersburg is a great city with goddess of the hunt, but defend it? Very difficult. You need to cut down 2 forests north.

Turn 51

Russia is nice to me.

My dead scout equals your dead archer.

Yeah, I will probably be able to take St.Petersburg. Mistake upon mistake.

The terrain of my approach is forest and his backside is tundra.

More importantly, his capital is not on a hill.

This might be possible. My choke might become a conquest. hammer

Thanks to the archer surviving with 1 or 2 health not to my mistake means a dead eagle warrior. And makes this a bit closer.

The weak point as so often, the city, not the pesky archers.

Just in time a governor. 5 turns.
And Russia got a 3rd city down. Disappointing. I need to conquer more.

Turn 56

Another eagle down. Acceptable loss as the city is down to 50, one archer of his is wounded east and next turn.

Well, a forward plant as a reaction is a good idea. I do hope it will be followed up by troops.

I delay my 2 campuses further. 4 eagles should take care of this flank.

I need to start my economy back up after this war. Moscow was too big a prize thanks to the natural wonder though.

Turn 57

The last build out of St.Petersburg is another archer. No loss this turn. Although the dice prevent me from hitting his archer. The city had 1 health after 2 attacks. No matter, attack number 3 takes care of it. I bombard the archer in the east. But with the capital gone and one city left, I doubt he can offer up more resistance.

Question is what now. I need to scout with 2 eagles to get my scouting back on track. I need 2 more settlers and I need to deal with Arabia which pinkdotted me.

Lost another eagle, losses are high. Consolidate and move on to the city east.

My reinforcements arrive in time. 5 warriors and 2 archers should be able to finish off a wounded Russia. I might need a horseman for safety on that front. Maybe a worthwhile buy?
