PBEM 8: E-mail & Technical Issues

Alright I consider myself on the clock. I'm going to take a little time to think about it now that the settings are in. Everyone else can think now too. I'll post my pick here when I've got it.

I would like to know whether huts or barbarians will be enabled and what difficulty we plan on using as this may affect who I want to pick, but if everyone agrees that we choose without knowing these that's fine with me.

EDIT: Oh and someone suggested not having Ivory on the map. This would be good to know, because at least one Civ cannot build their UU. Not that I was planning on picking this civ, but I definitely won't if they have no UU.

I think Quick is fine, never played it before but I think that will work better for pacing. And since it's quick I can play a practice game or two while we get through the starting turns! lol

I don't really mind about huts, barbs, or difficulty. But lets not make it too wild here, I'm not much more than a decent monarch player.

No rush on your leader pick Silent, we don't have to be done until all the map decisions are settled and it's made!

I agree about not making picks until we know all the settings. Take your time I'd say until we figure them all out.

np, take your time.

I think Huts should be off.

Barbs and difficulty IMO fall under 'going blind'. However, if we want to, we can choose difficulty and barbs settings (I don't mind either way)

The other option that was suggested is keeping Ivory on the map, but banning War Elephants. I would probably be for that since it keeps that resource in the game, and the main problem is WE anyway.

+1

I know that the map maker would like to put all of us in some wacky scenario, but let's keep things reasonable.

ahem... looks like i've taken the early lead in the village idiot stakes. smoke
my time zone is Pacific time, so GMT-8 not +8. the playing time is the same, 5pm ET to midnight ET. sorry... smoke

as for map settings. i prefer more food to less. i would strongly prefer huts Off. i don't have a preference in terms of barbs or difficulty although i'd second (third?) comments made earlier that we should try to avoid anything too crazy.

SilentConfusion (GMT -7, but will move to GMT -5)
ShoottheMoon (GMT -8 )
WarriorKnight (GMT +8)

So there we go!

From what I've seen I'd say huts off and then barbs/difficulty at the discretion of the mapmaker (just don't go too hard on us lol )

How about a poll on ivory? And then, I think, that will leave the rest done and ready to pick leaders/civs.
A) Ivory + WE allowed
B) No Ivory at all
C) Ivory but no WE

B for me

I'm US Pacific time as well. I thought that was GMT -7, but maybe it's GMT -8 like two other people already said. I tried to use a calculator online. Daylight savings time may mess with that too. Not sure. Anyway. I live in US Pacific Coast Time and may move 2 time zones east, but I may not. Who knows?

About the Ivory/WE issue...

Why is there a desire to ban War Elephants? I have never come across this before, but at least one of the other PBEM games that started banned WEs and people are talking about it as if it's the thing to do. If everyone has Ivory nearby, is it still unbalanced?

My vote would be to allow War Elephants, until someone can tell me why they should be banned. If they are to be banned, which I'm OK with, I don't mind Ivory being on the map for smile and x2 wonder building to ToZ. We can just agree not to build them just like spies.

my only concern is we all have a level playing field. ivory tends to show up in "clumps" on unedited maps so as long as the map is edited so everyone has access, i don't mind it being included. i also don't mind it being excluded smile

War Elephants are just unbalanced... There's nothing that really matches it in it's era. Promote an elephant with Shock and even spears have some degree of difficulty.

I think Catapults are an effective way of countering War Elephants, but I agree that spears are weak versus Shock WEs. Defensively Spears can hold off WEs, but on the offense the best bet is Catapults. Using 2 spears could also work and since spears are much cheaper you can build more of them than WEs.

Since they don't receive defensive bonuses, other WEs also at least match WEs.

I don't really care if they're allowed. If someone else has Ivory and I don't, I won't be upset. Sure it'll pose a problem, but I think it is not one that can't be countered. Up to you guys though.
