This game will have 34 civs in it. 34. There are 7 religions in the game ... so getting a religion and spreading it around will be big. Having that religion's Shrine will be even bigger.
The question is ... which religion to chase. The first three are non-starters (I don't start with Mysticism) so that leaves ... - Conf at CoL - a tech target and hence lots of competition
- Toaism at Philosophy - a good option as you can lightbulb this with a Great Scientist ... but also are tech target as it is on the liberalism path
- Christianity at Theology - another good option as there are lots of other techs that people might be chasing at this stage
- Islam at Divine Right - possibly the last religion and hence people might be really chasing hard for it
I will also look at grabbing one of the early wonders that generates Great Priest points (stonehenge?).

Here is an interesting thought regarding a different way of getting a religion ... you take it from someone else.
Assuming that this map is cramped, an early aggressive start (axes and cats) could result in an nice, early game land grab. Pity that I have exactly(!) the wrong traits for that type of game. Anyway - it all depends on the map and how close the others are.

I expect to be back about 8pm Friday night (NYC time) ... so play if you can. Scout to hut is what I did in the test game (before I saw the post about not moving for T1 in that game) and popped 21 or 22 gold. Your instructions for this turn ... are ...

I played the turn and then read your suggestion ... oh well. I also changed some of the in-game names ... more on that later tonight when I post some pictures.
Re Hunting ... I usually steer clear of that tech so that I can keep building warriors for MP purposes. Dangerous as it leaves me exposed to chariots and horse archers but that is what I usually do. I guess this game is shaping up as a non-typical ruff game.
