Exciting finish to the ashes! But I'm rather less confident of having much gold left by the end of the series.

Have chosen machinery as my next tech.

I was going to ask you your eta for feudalism but I got an email from athlete saying he was going for it and that he'd persuaded you to research paper instead.

Do you want to sort out a paper for machinery trade? Beaker costs are 600 (paper) and 700 (machinery) but I still owe you 50 beakers.

I hate watching those types of finish on TV or Radio. I walked the dog instead. Australia has a history of losing the last wicket 3 runs short (Brisbane years and years ago against West Indies or the last Ashes in England). But a great start to the series.

Re trade - will need to set something up for MC first.

You supply paper (600 beakers on normal), I give machinery (700) and we cancel the 50 beakers I owe you. That leaves 50 beakers, which let's say is 20 gold when we convert to quick speed and account for gold being better than beakers. Which will just find its way back into your pocket after the next test.

Athlete is going Feudalism and I am thinking of swapping away to paper. I notice that you have Metal Casting (450). Would you like to trade for Theology (500)? Throw in 30g and it is yours. However, I would require a no AP build but I would encourage you regarding the other wonder with Theology. I will be trying to hold off any Theology deal with sooooo as I don't want him to land another GE wonder.

Current research is Paper but I have Calendar on offer. We shouldn't need any IOUs as we can trade gold to balance any beaker difference.

Dreylin is starting to come around to my view on the developing tech trading blocks. Got an offline message from him this morning - more later on that.

I've been talking to mh about MC and he doesn't seem that keen to trade with me. It is starting to feel like he is forming an anti-ruff trading approach. Or is it an anti-Eastern trading approach - is he talking to you about trades?

How are your talks with the others (Dreylin and Athlete) regarding tech trades going?

I settled 2 cities last turn (fish & stone). I now have only 3 cites left and 2 of those are filler sites. The 3rd one is a pretty poor site with little food, peaks and desert. As such, my kingdom cannot grow horizontally very much. I must grow my cities vertically to have any hope of competing.

Can I still win this game? Totally! but not via military or tech. My options:

• Religious Diplo - very strong chance as long as I can talk 1 person into voting for me
  
• UN Diplo - weak
  
• Conquest - no chance
  
• Domination - no chance
  
• Space - maybe, but I will need to build some very strong hammer cities (which I will have) and rely on others for tech help
  
• Culture - possible but can I hold sooooo off while I turn up the slider?

But seriously, Dreylin and I currently have an arrangement that he will always vote for me as Pope. If the game starts to deteriorate for him, I am pretty sure that I can get him to expand that to a vote for Diplo Victory.

I can see the diplo victory like this: rather than my enemy winning, I'd rather see my friend winning. Still, the chances are not that great imo.
