Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

XCOM: Enemy Unknown aka the one where Haphazard dies repeatedly

Ok so to re-cap our priorities

1. Capture an Outsider at all costs
2. Retrieve as many Weapon Fragments and Alien Alloys as possible (e.g. minimise use of explosives)
3. Develop soldiers below Colonel rank

We deploy a mixed squad to try and achieve these

From our initial deployment its obvious this is going to be bigger than a scoutship (basically this is the first 'Abduction Ship' encounter so bigger crew, especially when landed rather than shot down)

Three mutons pop up on the first alien turn. Haphazard managed to wound one as it dives for cover. Mardoc missed his reaction shot so moves closer and tries again. He misses again but destroys the Muton's cover and his Holo Targeting make Haphazards finishing shot easy.

Another of the Mutons appears but gets critically hit by Ug and its attempt to vapourize Mardoc goes wide. Mardoc kills it in reply

The last Muton takes another hit from Haphazard as it advances and again Mardoc sees hot plasma fly by him as he frantically reloads. As we've a single wounded target, we try for a practice capture (& a free plasma rifle).

Ug hits it with a disabling shot which has the unfortunate effect of causing the Muton to 'Intimidate' and both Ug and Xenin to panic - luckily without adverse effect.
Haphazard closes with his arc thrower ready whilst Gustaran lays down suppressing fire. Results in an easy first capture

Whilst we re-organise and reload, the team hears sounds from the left of the UFO. We move closer and get two sources of noise, eventually revealing three more Mutons.
Ug critically hits one as it goes to ground but another gets off a shot which wounds Dazed.
Their movement also seems to activate another patrol inside the wall of the UFO

Dazed retreats and Ug headshots the remaining visible Muton. We continue to retreat slowly and let the Mutons advance into reaction fire. Xenin hits a Muton but panics from its roar and blasts a hole in the side of the UFO. Ug finishes it off.

Gustaran is busy healing Dazed when they are rushed by Mutons from inside the UFO. Dazed's reaction shot goes wide leaving us in this position

Dazed flanks and kills the nearest Muton whilst Gustaran covers him with a smoke grenade. The other Muton disappears back into the UFO whilst one of the ones outside re-appears only for Mardoc and Haphazard to blaze away at it wildly. After a volley of misses, Gustaran finally nails it.

We spot a Muton Beserker through the hull breach Xenin made earlier and exploit its tendency to chase whoever shot it last. Haphazard and Ug wound it before Dazed dashes over to get the kill.

However three mutons appear briefly and one of them critically hits Haphazard, leaving him down to 1 hit point yikes

After a couple of turns of maneuvering, Ug takes down the remaing Muton outside the UFO and Mardoc nails one of the ones inside. As the team advances into the UFO, Gastaran tags a moving Muton and then finishes it with an aimed shot.

We close up to the Command deck in a risky 'please grenade me' fashion to try for the capture - pistols only people !

We open the portal and reveal two Outsiders. Xenin runs in and shots the one in the head for 3 damage. Gustaran follows up with the arc thrower and stuns it.
Dazed runs up to the second outsider and rapid fires his pistol from close range, doing a measly 1 pt of damage. Ug follows up and critically hits the Outsider for 3 more. This leaves Haphazard a second easy capture to finish the mission

We get promotions for :
Ug - 'Double Tap' (my preference) or 'In the Zone'
Haphazard - 'Savior' or 'Sentinel'
Xenin - 'Lightning Reflexes' or 'Close and Personal'

Lots of loot recovered including 160 Alien Alloys, 40 Weapon fragments, two light Plasma Rifles and one Plasma Rifle.

That's one hell of an intimidation if it panicked me from the grave! :P
On average, everybody thinks they are above average.

Excellent work, Ug! smile

Our first Abductor ship, they give plenty of loot so this is overall a good thing even though they are tougher missions. Good decision on the plasma cannon for our interceptors, we will need them to shoot down the bigger and tougher UFOs.

I was glad to see my avatar really working hard this mission: mutiple hits, reaction shots, stunning two aliens. smile He almost died yikes but will be back in action after a while. And he has reached Colonel! jive I like Sentinel more than Savior, although both can be useful.

At the very start of your report, you listed a bunch of promotions and then mentioned getting Iron Will. I really hope you did that in the opposite order. lol

We look to be in pretty good shape overall, and with the Outsider capture we can research the shard and build the skeleton key to enable the alien base mission. Since we have waited this long opposition will be fairly tough, so I would prefer to wait a bit longer and complete research and manufacturing of better armor before we take on the base. I love Titan armor for the massive durability, but some of the other options are also attractive. What do the rest of you think on armor?

I am in favor of Titan Armor.

Does the base really get that much harder over time? I typically do it on month 3 or 4 if I can manage it w/ Laser & Carapace and it feels alright.

A few questions:

- What difficulty level are you playing? If you are above Normal, consider trying an easier difficulty. (But not Easy. Because it's...easy. lol )

- How many aliens are you fighting at one time? If you are activating additional groups without wiping out each group fully, then don't do that. (Not always possible, as Ug's double muton group in this last mission showed. But generally you want to fight one group at a time, so avoid moving into fresh territory until you have finished each group.)

- What cover are you using for your squad members? Getting the cover mechanics right is a very big part of the game.

These are some of the things that seem to give a lot of people trouble at first. But more description of how your soldiers are dying would help.

A few tips I picked up (playing Classic).
1) When possible, NEVER end a turn in partial cover unless you want to get hit. Especially in the early game. Otherwise, hunker down to provide the full cover bonus, especially if you weren't going to make the shot/overwatch shots anyways.
2) Oversight is your friend. Especially if a few are in oversight, one guy activates a new group, and suddenly you all get free hits as they scatter.
3) Splitting the team is bad, unless they can stay in cover and get a flank.
4) Early game you won't win straight firefight trades. Late game you can win some, and just focus-fire the rest. Until you get like 6 Mutons....

Well, my first run was on normal and i was progressing well but had no idea what i was doing with cover or anything else half the time.

So i just started a new one on classic. I think i am trying to engage too much in a straight fire fight, but it is maddening to have soldiers in overwatch miss all the time, and then the enemy thin man steps out and crits my guy hiding in full cover. I think half my losses have been crits on guys behind full cover.

Down to a sniper and a support and a lot of rookies. Just started month two, and i save scummed the first abduction in month two because sniper missed his overwatch shot only to be crit behind full cover. Support suffered the same fate: behind full cover and one-shot. Rookies panicked and shot each other.

Try again. I hate that i save scummed - it makes me want to start all over frown

I do hate triggering additional groups. But i'm not trying to activate more once i get one set activated. Some maps it seems that there's no way you can only fight one set at a time.

Thin Men = super snipers. They seem to hit all their shots. The jerks.

One technique is to get SCOPEs on the sniper and assaults so they can nail more hits, killing more aliens before they get to shoot. The other is screw the odds we have flanks (and probably get all the other aliens on our tail)!
