[Spoilers] Commodore as Darius of the HRE

Make lonely updates,
Hear no feedback, see no words,
Contemplate sorrow.

Research to full blast,
Still behind; Egypt, Mali,
Runaways for sure.

Statue lost, no prob,
Cristo already? Holy crap.
This gets silly, guys.

Railways going up
All over the whole empire
Workers getting bored.

Heroic Epic,
Up and running, now churning,
Two turn machine guns.

Core builds culture stuff,
Waiting for factories then:
Org production springs!

Power back to third,
But check out Mali's nuts chart.
We're to dog-pile that?

Idle check reveals:
Crap, they could win culture too.
Some newb game this is.

Game hates us, it seems.
Popped another one, stupid thing.
Nice third legend city?

Bleh, gave it a run,
Now play out the string and soon,
Fireworks and fun!

Heh. In other news, I now blame this all on the fact that I started with hunting. I never heard the wise old saying about the rabbits.

Things are looking decent, actually, for the gear-up. Industrialism is nice but not actually the first priority...once assembly line comes in (1-turn tech next turn), it goes optics, astronomy, scientific method, physics, and then combustion, which is the only 2-turner in that list. The SoL failgold will see me at 100% for the next four/five turns, which is certainly nice.

The only real question now is which religious civic to swap to at the end of the GA. All three options have their perks:

Staying in Pacifism. This one sounds odd, but my GPP pool isn't actually all that deep still. Aquilonia is working on a GP, hopefully not an artist, most of the pool in Zingara is artist-flavored. I could probably get another GA in ten turns or so if I stick in pacifism. If Aquilonia spawns a Sistine-caused artist, it'll be a moot point, so let's see that one first.

Organized Religion. Obvious, what with every city in the empire about to build an Org factory and then probably a coal plant. Plus, it's less expensive for me than anyone else here, as my Org makes a real dent on the expensive civic.

Theocracy. I've crunched the numbers, and even free speech doesn't compel me to leave bureaucracy right now, it'd just gut my research too much. However, drydocks give only +4 XP...and RL7 have circumnavigation. If I want to be on equal terms in a naval fight, I need Flanking I and then Navigation I. Plus, hey, two-promo infantry, cannon, and machine guns are nice.

Actually, I've been away from the internet since Thursday, thus the silence. I'm still fully plugged into the game and checking often for updates.

I'm not surprised you *twitched*, but I was in a hurry to sneak in a post before you posted your own followup.

I haven't opened Civ on any computer in weeks [/confession] but I hope to rectify that tonight and check your situation in game...

Well, we live to entertain, so you need but ask.

Brief update this morning, headed with: We're Number One! (in a GA, researching 100%, barely)

Okay, so I was seriously worried about artist points pollution in Aquilonia, as Zingara popping its borders led to a wash of artist points in its pool as well. I starved Aquilonia slightly pushing out the GP this turn, at 40% artist, 30% engineer, and 28% scientist odds.

Okay, RNG, you're an odd duck. I'll take it though, and either a merchant, scientist, or artist would be fine out of Zingara.

Caste system artists are populating every border now. Sigh, my poor French holdings are still in a cultural slugging match.

Also note the obnoxious machine gun grinning at the camera in Dol Amroth. I need to blitzkrieg that city ASAP on the onset of war. Maybe Sirian the place with ironclads->galley'd in infantry and marines?

Next turn? Masses of cheap factories.

Quote:Hi Commodore and Luddite,

With the turns flying as quickly as they did recently, we're now less
than 10t away from expiration of our NAP with RL7. With a dogpile
against him in the works, I don't really want to extend it. However, I
need your advice before committing to a decision

RL7 were researching Combustion last turn, and assume they got it now.
Good thing there is no land-based oil, and Plastics is an expensive
tech, but I think they can get it in 12-15 turns maximum. So the
window before they get Tanks/Bombers is small, and we should attack
soon if we want a chance to succeed

So, when do you think the attack should start? When do we need to have
the forces ready, and do we need to start talks about NAP extension?
Let me know your thoughts

Cheers

Meant to hit "reply to all":

Hrm, my understanding is that the Egypt-Mali NAP is 'till turn 150. Seven hit me up looking for a NAP extension, but I declined, so we're still at a 7-turn roller. Yuri, any chance you could negotiate for a rolling NAP and them time cancellation for 150?

By Turn 150 I'll have a solid uranium navy (my HE city just got drydocks, so I'll be pushing out tons of 2-turn destroyers), plenty of infantry, and at least a strike force of marines. What can be done with each of you guys? Yuri, if the answer is "defend with Cavs/cannon", that's fine too, but it might actually make sense to have your NAP expire a turn or two before the rest of us, to bog down Malinesee attackers.

Well, from my experience of negotiating with RL7, he won't sign a NAP
for free. He has an advantage, knows it, and wants to use it. My NAP
is until T141 incl, seems silly to sign a rolling NAP and concede
something (I have no idea what yet), then cancel it 2 turns later

Mass-producing Cavalries and Cannons seems to be the way to go for me,
whether I will be able to use them on offence is another matter. I
also intend to draft Rifles after the golden age ends and upgrade them
to Infantries - should be more efficient than drafting Infantries.
Whether I will be able to stage better units is a different matter; I
will have to obsolete Colossus to get them, and I don't know how much
research rate will be hurt by it. But Infantries and Cavalries should
be good enough pre-Tanks/Bombers

So, I think the best plan is to let the NAP expire, get Machine Gun
defenders everywhere, then start spamming Cavalries and Cannons.
Unless you have a better idea

Cheers

I think Luddite's goal is a mass of tanks or mobile artillery or something by T150. But I really don't know. I am a sub and lurker at this point only.

Hey guys-

Sorry I was on the plane all day yesterday and couldn't respond to this.

I had been hoping that I'd be able to outtech Seven in military techs, but now it's look like that's not really possible. Still I should be able to at least match him.

My thinking is that any landbased attack is doomed to fail. He can bring in artillery from 10 tiles away, clobber it with collateral damage, and finish off the stack with whatever. So if you want to build cavalry and cannons to defend (or just keep him busy), that's fine, but I wouldn't try and attack him with it.

We stand a much better chance attacking by sea. He's got a lot of cities to defend, and it's very hard to defend your whole coast against naval attacks. So I think we should try and build as many boats/marines as we possibly can, and wear him down that way. I'll try and tech advanced flight to get an advantage in the air.

My own NAP with him expires turn 150, which I think will be enough time for me to build a nice uranium-based navy. It would be nice if yuris could extend his NAP until then, just so he doesn't have to fight seven alone. But if not, at least try to slow him down as much as possible, and we can gift yuris some units to help defend.

Man it sucks to be in Yuri's shoes, but with cavs and cannon on rails, he should at least make any Malineese assault grievously painful. Luddite's naval plan is probably the best policy here.

Perfect. Now I'll be going for a merchant, artist, or engineer, either way it is fine.

Health is getting decidedly problematic here, but MFG will be improved here shortly. Actually, if the bonus shows up in demos I'm betting my graphs will show the spike starting this turn, as every single core city works on a factory here.

Man, and I have every health resource available. This is why RL7 is sounding kind of desperate for wheat. Need to go up the price to Luddite, too. Ah, at least I have windmill room, and biology is ~4 turns away if needed.

Well I opened the game for the first time in a long time.

You'd have a tough road to a culture victory... you'd need to start spreading religion with all possible speed to have a chance. Fortunately, everyone else is in the same boat. In particular, RL7 has only 2 religions available, and you'd probably beat him... if he gave you enough time.

I honestly think the military route is the better option. Even though it requires the two giants to take large bites out of each other, if the dogpile sticks together it could work out for you. You're not just playing out the string here, you're drafting the lead cars.

NAP Mali/Egypt - t150
NAP Mali/Radioland - t141

When does your NAP expire? t140?

I'm pretty confident that Mali could cripple Radioland in 9 turns... boy do you have tough choices to make.

IF Mali declares on Yuri, you can watch and see what happens... RL7 would benefit by taking one dog out of the fight early.
IF Mali declares on Yuri, and you jump in with him... Luddite benefits by having RL7 deploy his forces early.
