[SPOILERS] HAK tries Civ5 for the first time before it becomes obsolete

So a bit of a T49/T50 update (started on T49 since I mistakenly thought the turn yesterday was 50).  So first just a quick Image spam:

I'm still just mostly flying by the seat of my pants.  I'm building a settler in my capital, which will go down south to settle the coastal city on my Iron hill.
I'm also building my 3rd Worker in my 2nd city.  End of this turn my other Spice Plantation will be finished.  I had been trading my first spice to Nicolai for the past long time.
The other worker, along with a warrior to give him cover is going to build my Iron mine in the north.  Yuri just finished his Gold mine on the tile next to the Iron.
Yuri has a couple scouts around my area, but I haven't really seen much else.  His war with Nicolai ended, so not sure what he's got going on right now.  Other than that my scout spotted that he had a barb encampment near his borders and also some pillaged improvements, which I guess he was going to have to rebuild (though they still looked built).  So hopefully any military of his is going to be busy with those barbs.
I've sent my own Slinger and other Warrior SW to deal with some barbs of my own.

This turn I also finally got my next Policy so was able to get Monarchy to finally get myself out of being unhappy.  The unhappy face has been hurting my production and all that for the past many turns.  But there was nothing I could do about that.

Right now I'm currently sending my scout back home so that he can go across the water to that island and see about getting me that ruins, and explore that direction.  Yes, lots of wasted scout turns, but I just don't have the time right now to build a new one.

That's how tile improvements work in Civ 5. A pillaged improvement stays there but nonfunctional until a worker repairs it.

What to do about that is avoid the growth that sent you into unhappiness in the first place. There's an avoid-growth checkbox in each city for that. If it was settling a city that pushed you into unhappy, then you should have avoided growth of another city before that.

So do I only get these bonuses from my ally if I have a road connecting us or something?  I've looked and can't seem to see where these might be displayed if I'm actually getting them now.

For a maritime city-state, the food shows up on your city tile.

For cultured, religious, and mercantile CS, the bonus shows up in the mouseover for that type of yield at the top of the main screen.

Thanks Thawk.  I see that now.

Anyway, I recently built a second scout and last turn got him over to those ruins on the island to my SE:

So that helps a little bit towards my next policy.  So in 11 turns, I'll have the Tradition tier completed and can then start deciding which one to choose next to work on.

I'll have my first Swordsman built next turn, so that should help with my lack of military.  Then I'll be needing to make another city to my west.    I have a spot in mind that I think might be a good one.  I'll try to remember to take a screenshot next turn so that I can point out my thoughts on it.  Everything else is just pretty much status quo.  That 2nd city in the north of mine is building a Granary while a worker finishes it's Iron mine and another makes a pasture on the Cattle.  My other worker is building a road from that city to my capital to increase commerce.
My new city in the south that got settled on top of that iron hill is making a work boat to net the Pearls for additional happiness.  It will then make another work boat to net the fish inside the lake.

So I a day or so ago I finally got around to taking that screenshot of my planned next city (though then of course haven't gotten around to posting)...so here it is.

Way back when I was going my initial thoughts, I had planned on putting a city on that Plains 1SW of those Truffles (basically right below where that tile info box is). After Yuri settled that city in the north and messed up my plan of having a city on that river, I started having to think of different locations. So my current plan is the tile 1W of the Truffles. Putting the city there allows for it possibly having in it's 3-tile borders the Truffles, 2 Cattle, Gold, and if I buy tiles fast enough can even get that Iron that is next to Milan's border.
Another spot I'm somewhat considering is 1NW of the Truffles, putting the city next to the Desert. I already forget which wonder it is, but there's a wonder that I could theoretically build in the city that actually gives resource (food/production) output from Desert tiles. But the city would need to be on or next to a desert.
My settler from Cusco is almost done, so I'll have to make the decision soon.

Off to the east I kept my scout gong east across the water after exploring that little island. He hit another landmass not too far over, with more ruins. Last turn I got the ruins...the prize of which converted the scout into a Slinger. Actually a reward I did NOT want. LOL. I needed a scout for exploring, and now it's gone. Heh.

Actually, if you look at your archer a bit closer you'll notice a yellow promotion which says "ignores terrain movement cost". So it still functions as a scout, only with a mean ranged attack  cool

First, thanks taotao for that piece of info.  Didn't realize that.  So all good on that front.

On the rest of the front...I'm really screwed now.  Nicolae just did a very aggressive city plant, totally screwing me the same turn my next settler completed:

He has COMPLETELY invalidated my being able to gain access to ANY of those resource tiles in the middle of the map between us.  I can't put a city anywhere that will allow me to get those Truffles or Cattle.  The ONLY valid spot left in that entire section of the map is that one plains tile down on the coast 1E of the Wheat.  So if I want to be able to settle anywhere west of me, I would need to somehow build up enough military to attack and raze that city of his.  And my military is still puny compared to his.  Though I do already have a Swordsman that has just been sitting around doing nothing.
Seeing this, I did just switch my capital to building a second Sword, and started Tiwanaku to build a Composite Bowman.  But even with those, I don't think I'd be able to do anything about his city.  This version of Civ doesn't seem to have any way to gain the proper intelligence of your neighbors at this stage to compare power levels.

So with this situation happening, I'm having to need to decide where to send my settler.....

A couple turns ago I was the first to meet another city-state across the seas...

And I had gotten that island to my SE explored.  And looking at how the resources are around it in the waters....I think at this point, my best option for next city is to settle on the forest tile 1W of the Deer:

That'll give the city eventual access to Deer & Furs immediately, and eventual access to Iron and 3 Fishes.

I did briefly consider settling that area to my NE, but decided I want that 3rd Iron ASAP.  I think I'm going to need those more powerful soldiers more urgently at this rate.
And I should probably figure out how i'm going to squeeze out another settler to grab that coast in the south as the next city, even before going to the NE region, which should be save for at least a little while with Mombasa being a separator.

On yet another note, I did meet Ichabod a couple turns ago somewhere.  I have no idea where, since I never saw a unit of his.  And since I was first to meet Ife, I don't think it was in that region...unless he passed by my scout immediately after I met them.

And still at this point, I have no clue what I'm going to be doing.  Things have just been hectic in my life and I haven't really had time to put much thought into this game.  Aside from the fact that I'm simply trying to learn this version of Civ on the fly.  smile

Just a couple quick image updates before I forget to post them.  Maybe I'll post some words later, but not tonight. smile

Am I missing something simple here? How do I find out who I am getting my happiness luxuries from via trade. I can't figure out which ones I'm getting from the other players. And I need to know which ones I'll lose when I go to war with someone. I'm in the process of getting ready to try to attack Nic to raze that city he built near me (so I can build a new one in a better spot), but I want to know what resources I'll lose when I declare war.
