I would like a diplomacy game but one that's restricted. For example: players only get their own timeslot/turn to make diplomatic proposals (like in Settlers of Catan) if you can't get them out fast enough, then tough luck.
On the Setup:
I assume no DLC civs, with the amount of OP in them? Though to misquote Syndrome: "When everyone is OP, no one is"
With the maps I'd actualy suggest Fractal for good water play. The Snaky Continents often have natural chokepoints, making Naval invasions preferable. Only issue is that civs get spread out very weirdly, some end up direct neigbours and some have an enitire pangea worth of land to themselves.
I've rolled quite a few starts on the Island Plates map, but it always seems to end up with most of the civs clumped together on a continent and some having their own smaller continent. That does not a balanced game make.

Just to add another point of consideration to the diplomacy discussion. Some players don't have english as their first language, so it's a lot more trouble for them to play with diplomacy. Being in this position, I can say that, for me, it takes at least double the time it would take for a native speaker to write a diplo message and it's way harder to participate in real time conversations. So, it's an even larger commitment.
The point depends on who's playing, but I think it's worth taking into account.

I am not really satisfied with the AI diplomacy, takes a lot of attractiveness of the human element in those games away in my eyes. I am open to a public diplomacy thread, if that is what you mean by limited. If not, please expand on what you are thinking.

Exactly like that.
Boardgame diplomacy might be a viable compromise.

I read somewhere that pins can we set visible to other players. Not sure how it works or if it is to a specific player/players, all players, affects all pins or only specific pins ... but it might be something to look into as a diplo option. Can only place pins and therefore only send messages when playing a turn so no holding turn waiting for an email or forum reply.

Here's the turn order I drew up
CFC Jesterfool (11:00 - 11:30 GMT)
Singaboy (11:00 - 14:00 GMT)
Woden (11:00 - 14:00 GMT)
Japper007 (14:00 - 4:00 GMT)
OleDavey (14:00 - 16:00 GMT)
The Archduke (16:00 - 20:00 GMT)
CFC Jesterfool (21:00 - 02:30 GMT)
Singaboy (21:00-02:30 GMT)
Woden (00:00 - 04:00 GMT)
Japper007 (14:00 - 4:00 GMT)
OleDavey (02:00 - 05:00 GMT)
The Archduke (05:00 - 07:00 GMT)
Also, just for reference:
Singaboy: Singapore
OleDavey: U.S. (Central)
Woden: U.S. (Central)
Archduke: Austria
Japper007: Netherlands
CFC Jesterfool: U.S.
This is the best I could come up. The biggest problem I see is the window between CFCJF's evening and Singaboy's morning, but I think it's manageable.
Please check that your timeslots are correctly converted to GMT, and if you see something I missed, or think that you will not be able to play in the timeslots allotted, please point it out.

If people do want some diplomacy, I wouldn't mind a public diplomacy thread. Having effectively board game diplomacy sounds good to me.
Just as long as nobody has a GChat and then posts it in later, I will go haul Lewwyn out of retirement to chew people out.
@Woden, does wet produce more fresh water? I was also under the impression from the PBEM3 set up that abundant simply changed the resources rather than made more of them.

My understanding is that a Wet Climate provides more freshwater, marshes, oasis and vegetation (forests and jungle). I find when I play with it, there is some added fresh water and a lot more trees.
I typically find that abundant resources adds more groupings and larger groups of resources. So instead of having 1 resource, you may have 2 or 3 of the same type close together. In PBEM3, their example did add noticeably more seafood and a few more land resources but they used the same map/game seed for comparison. IDK if seeds have anything to do with resources. You won't think so but you never know.
Later tonight I will see if I can put a few comparisons together and post here. Both for climate and resources.

Crazy, the play times will make the save bounce around the world a few times: US->Singapore->US->Netherlands(?)->US->Austria
