Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

Quite a few possibilities for this one, but the 3 that strike out the most are WATER, SINK and CRASH.

Backups are BOARD, BAY and FISH, but hopefully we won't need them as I wouldn't know how to rank them.

Mardoc: Not a huge fan of DRILL tbh, but it's another option we can consider. I prefer CRASH though.

Water and Sink for sure

then:
crash? that's why we're sinking
board? get on board
Bay? Seems unlikely as less need of a lifeboat in a bay?

Point to WATER
Point to SINK

I'm just amused. Looks like I instigated quite the disaster by jumping in at the last minute and then upsetting the apple cart on the normal procedures. And speaking of disasters, I'm chiming in here super late today after four extra hours of driving thanks to a bridge closed for a gas leak.

Anyway, on with the show, assuming Water and Sink hit. First off, I don't like Crash. To say Water + Sink + Crash, there's an unmistakable clue in Titanic.

As I always say, reverse-engineer the clue. What combination would lead the spymaster to think of Lifeboat? Water + Sink + either Drill or Board is what gets there. Not Bay or Fish or Sign, those wouldn't bring your thinking to this clue.

Board and Drill seem about equally probable. I favor Board since that's safer on the downside. I think it's possible for a spymaster to overlook or be unfamiliar with "lifeboat drill" as a phrase, while boarding a lifeboat has to be noticed as something you'd expect the team to potentially guess.

In other words, I like Board, reasoning that it has to be no-worse-than-gray. If it is, then no harm done and we catch up on Drill next round. If that also misses, then try Fish after that.

Not convinced on Crash. Just because a better clue exists doesn't mean the spymaster thought of it, and Crash is a pretty strong connection to Lifeboat regardless. I am willing to put this as a backup word though.

I've never heard of a Lifeboat Drill but if that's a thing then that is a specific reason to use Lifeboat, which means I'll put that as my choice from the remaining words.

I like Board the least of these 3, even though it's the safest, because then the clue could just be Boat (and I guarantee Dave did not miss Boat).

Agree that the others are too unlikely.

You can CRASH a party by turning up uninvited.
Birthday parties feature BALLOONs.
You can speak of parties to a CONTRACT.

I don't see any strong connections otherwise. Time for some reaching!
ZOMBIE as a reference to Thriller?
Party-cle BOARD?

You often bring BALLOONS to a party.
It is possible to CRASH a party. This could, however, be blue but I think the connection is good enough to risk pointing to it.

These two I feel confident about. As for the rest,

A music JAM would get the party going.
FISH or CHEESE could be served at a party.

Um, I`m really unsure here.

@Fenn:

Ah, I missed the CONTRACT - PARTY connection. That`s likely one of the words we`re looking for.
