After seeing the potential damage of my crossbowmen and loosing another horseman in the south to oledavy´s coupled with the fact, that I can get rid of the encampment this turn and probably not anymore next turn, we are going for it over the knight.

How much damage does the horse from across the river do?

To make matters even more safe, I use an enovy with Preslav. The nice thing about killing his barracks/encampment is that his GG progress is toast as well.
One crossbowmen dead on his side, double promoted. Both southern horses contained, 1 ready to be killed.
We could be off better, we could be off worse.
But how Oledavy wants to actually make progress by now, I have no idea. I am more then willing to exchange horseman for expensive knights or crossbowmen, whilst mine survive. If he does not retreat but attacks the encampment, another knight will die next turn if I am not totally off .

Awesome! I think his attack is pretty dead in its tracks now, whatever unit of his captures our encampment will die, as you say. Hopefully his pillaging horse is not too much of a nuisance?
How much XP do we need to get to Expert Marksman? Too bad crossbows can take cities, but I guess we can always build some fodder horses for actual attacks. It almost works better -- less maintenance, cheaper to replace.

Yeah, his horse can pillage one more tile, but he will be loosing both as I catch up to him.
If nothing bad happens, I think we build a 3rd crossbowmen by hand and then we can double GG move on Shuyler.
One 5move horseman is enough and they are cheap to build. 3 turns in most cities with the policy card.
With Knights being a bit vulnerable to our crossbowmen, this war will be won by who has more.
Right now, we have 2 and he has 2. So until that changes or he makes another mistake we are defensive.
I am curious if he wants to storm the encampment in the north, he probably will.

It seems to me that attacking in the crossbow era is just too difficult. Crossbows can hide in cities, concentrate fire and take down attackers one by one. Actually, it seems to me attacker is advantaged by using worse units, but more of them in this situation -- one expensive knight will still get shot up pretty bad every turn, but three cheap horsemen? Yeah, sure, one will die, but others live to push forward. Exactly what happened here, and I wonder whether we blindly stumbled onto a tactical discovery.

But yeah, we should be able to take Schuyler if we have three xbows. We just need quite a bit of horse fodder, otherwise our crossbows will get shot up quickly. He will be able to land at least two shots every turn, one at strength 52 -- no joke even against double-GG boosted strength.

Well, 4 movement means I can move into range and possibly take down the city wall before he can fire back.
What is sure however is that I doubt there will be peace between us, and this highely theoretical.
But what will do about his cities? Burn them as well?
Both are in excellent positions.

The big question is how many crossbows do we need to take out his walls in one turn, depriving of the ranged attack. If three are enough, should be enough.
