Thank you very much for the question; I'm sorry to have been unclear on so important a point.

...

To be honest, I've been thinking about how to answer this for a full day. I think the best answer is that I simply don't know how else to win the game. I figure if I just kill the other players enough, they'll concede, though I acknowledge the extreme hazards of such an undertaking. I have been thinking about the other (actual) victory conditions. Diplomacy is banned. Conquest and Domination would both be preempted by concession. Space Race and Culture would both take so long that any advantage I have gained would be rendered null and void (I'm convinced Azza would recover completely and Old Harry would probably surpass me, since he is a more skilled player), plus I really don't want to be playing this game for another six months or more. I may think about Culture as a backup if my invasion doesn't work, because it would be the quicker of the two. Besides that, all there is to do is tech military - build military - attack the next strongest opponent. Serdoa and Azza have both already offered to concede, so if I can kill Old Harry, my only "full-strength" opposition, the game should be mine. So I feel I have to attack him, and attack him now while I have a momentary advantage (Assembly Line), though I am fully cognizant that mere technology will not secure the victory against the numbers he can produce. The rate of production I can manage and the tactical handling of our troops will be decisive. I think. As you can probably tell, I don't really know what I'm doing; haven't all game. If this doesn't work out, I don't know what I'm going to do. Neither Old Harry nor I are interested in playing out Modern-era war turns; we might just call it a draw. If I get sick and tired of it, I might even concede. If I experience a renewed burst of energy after what will most certainly be a rather draining war, I may try for Cultural victory or another round of tech up & fight. Right now, I'm feeling nervously excited; I feel neither optimistic or pessimistic about my chances, though I'm being somewhat pessimistic in this thread so I don't look like a complete fool if I lose badly. Mostly I just feel eager to get the war started so I can get down to business and stop worrying. Come what may and all. With apologies to Sun Tzu for breaking his maxim. Anyway, I'll stop rambling now; hopefully that answers your question somewhat.

TL;DR: Necessity + incompetence + impatience = war on Old Harry.

Can you elaborate on why you feel that Old Harry will beat you in the long run?

I believe Old Harry has demonstrated he is a better player than me via his exceptional recovery from near-destruction to economic parity with the leader over the course of the game to this point. From economic parity here and now, I can only conclude he will outpace me as the game continues, leading to his inevitable victory unless I intervene now while I still have an advantage of some sort (this advantage was only gained though a Golden Age and a mild vestigial accumulated beaker lead). I believe a better player than myself would be assured of victory from my position at this point, but I simply lack the Civ-skill to take advantage thereof. The only thing I've been successful at so far in all my Civ-games on this site, and that only in this game, is achieving a brief military technological advantage over the other players through a combination of luck and the utmost economic exertion, and using it to attack someone before my window of opportunity closes. I figure I might as well keep doing what I'm okay-ish at, and avoid that which I'm demonstrably inferior at: attack rather than trying to develop economically. I'm sure most any of the non-green players on this site would win without question from this point, but me? I'm still very much a green. Hopefully that clarifies some more. smile

As for this turn, I drafted some more and spat out some cannon. I decided to upgrade everything all at once instead of some every turn so as not to give anything away: Old Harry mysteriously switched to Representation and Bureaucracy - I guess he feels safe for now ...

Do you guys like seeing the F1 screen every turn as a summary, or is it tedious? Just tell me what you'd like to see.

Thank you for your questions, thestick.

Last turn my power shot up over Old Harry's again as I finished five cannon and continued drafting to the max. I now have 11 cannon and 10 infantry in the field, and cash banked to upgrade to 11 more. I've started another round of cannon in my major cities. I plan to switch Aquanauts (Heroic Epic city) to two-turn infantry next turn, and may switch Pirates (Moai city) to three-turn infantry as well. The new cities are starting to contribute militarily as well: Vilcabamba (don't know why it's so high in the city list, shouldn't be) drafted an infantry this turn, and Fort Dawnguard will next turn. Cities continue to emphasize growth (er, manually, not through the AI) due to drafting requirements.

Not much to say this turn. Any questions?

How much of that happiness do you expect to remain after WW kicks in again?

Well, I reached the (apparent) war-weariness maximum in the last war at unhappiness equal to city size, but that was while at war with all three opponents. I don't expect it to get that bad again in this war until a) our stacks start annihilating each other, in which case a decision should have been reached anyway, or b) everyone else declares war on me again, in which case ... I take it like a man or run the culture slider. As always, thank you very much for the question!

This turn was far more reportable than last. In the northwest, Azza's new city of de_nuke renders my holdings there extremely vulnerable:

I upgraded my Guerrilla II rifleman in Fort Dawnguard to an infantry and shifted some troops around. I also plan to move some troops up from my western island, and you can see in the bottom-right my cavalry in position to respond if Azza tries any funny business. But they can't stay there forever what with this invasion in the works; Azza may take advantage of that conflict to seize these cities off me. I don't think he'd do that before I declare war, 'cause he'd be attacking the number one military power, he's already at war with Serdoa (and combat is occurring; Serdoa lost a Great General this turn), and ... a subtle psychological tell; he named the city de_nuke, which was the name of his city on the tile Fort Dawnguard now occupies - you'd think he'd save the name if he were planning to retake it. But he might always pull an Old Harry on me and raze the two cities unexpectedly.

In addition to all this, as you can see, Azza is two turns from Steam Power at breakeven science. With de_nuke, he now has 12 cities. Unless he concedes, even if I am successful against Old Harry, I will have to go fight him again, quite possibly with infantry. This game is like whack-a-mole (only the moles can actually kill you too). Meanwhile, Old Harry appears to have just teched Divine Right and Compass, having finished Theology and Military Tradition. Very interesting. Could it be that he doesn't expect an attack? Whether I see a wave of cavalry come out of his cities in a turn or two will determine that; I've only seen I think one so far (remember he's in neither Nationhood nor Slavery right now). Assuming dirt doesn't hit the fan with Azza by then, I hope to enter Old Harry's territory turn 174 with boatloads (er, not literally ...) of infantry. May or may not be successful. Should be fun. Here are my city builds:

Oh, if recent trends are any indication, I'm about to hit 10,000 views in this thread. I never thought I'd get that many; thank you to all my readers! What should I do to celebrate this momentous occasion?

Theme music ... hmm, I'll think about what strikes my fancy.

Why's it irrational though? lol
