After begrudgingly creating a 2k account and linking to it, I was able to load up the game:

A nice boost to start us off.

Settler moved onto the stone as discussed. Warrior moved SW, and will go down the river next turn.

I believe that settling on Stone is not removing it so you could harvest it later (losing permanently the second Hammer of the tile in your case) or build things that need to be next to Stone.

Ps - How do you get césar. I ha ve a 2k link account on epic (and i tested link and unlink) but still see the massage to link and cant see the leader in the choosing liste (I have the ultimatum or whatever it iss called with all dl c)

Since you mentioned both further up thread, Herson seems a better choice to take up on civ advice than PotatoMCWhiskey. The latter is more a casual good vibes streamer who is very good at scamming the deity AI, the former a top 5 in the world, at least, full time MP player. On the granary point: Herson never seems to bother lol (been watching through his VODs recently, am on a general civ kick since the civ7 announcement), unless he needs the housing.

He also doesn't seem to value pop highly at all, beyond hitting districts, since it eats into your amenities: in base game that's missing 15% to all yields. I've been applying this to my games and it is just absurd how GOOD amenities are. Like Amenities alone are enough to make Aztec a top tier civ.

My opnion, take it with a lot of salt, I have never been an impressive civ player... It is also the only early build, along with monuments, that provides no extra chance to get eurekas (and even monument let's you at least get civics faster). To me it looks like a greedy play. Do it if you feel save or have no choice (I.e. housing-blocked)

I agree with this. In my Greek game against randoms, war-weariness amenity penalties bogged my civ down to an incredible extent, and a determined amenities push AFTER the war nearly doubled my yields. Amenities matter a lot! They're a lot more impactful since release, having been patched a few times.

I feel in general, the patches and DLC have made the strategic space more limited. Amenities mean you can't settle/grow as unrestricted. Governors mean you can't chop/build builders without microing Magnus or Liang into the city, without accepting serious inefficiency. (In SP I don't even take either because it is so tedious to keep flying these bozos around, just Pingala with his flat bonuses in the cap). Era score means you have to prioritise things, and I feel like you're just checking off a list. We have more content and stuff to do, but we seem to have LESS choice.

I'm currently playing a game with friends, one of whom doesn't have any DLC beyond the Aztec pre order goodie. And it's liberating. That shouldn't be what missing DLC does!

/rant sorry for hijacking your thread Pindicator and Whosit, GLHF!

I take some of what Herson says with a grain of salt both because we're not playing with balance mods, and because the game culture here is different (Herson often seems to expect his opponents won't capture his settlers or builders, and I am pretty sure he never uploads the games he loses.

And just because some MP players ignore things doesn't mean there can't be a meta shift.

Also I chased high amenities pretty hard in PBEM 23 but possibly to the detriment of other objectives. Obviously they are important.

Yeah I agree that the culture is quite different in CPL. They have diplomacy and play in one lobby, it's way easier to avoid trollish settler/builder snipes when you can just call your opponent an asshat right in the chat. Their meta seems to have evolved the same way many FFA metas end up crystalising: early wars usually mean you and the guy you're fighting fall behind. It's the same in say, Age of Empires or even Total War (where the player that wins FFA is the one that still has all his troops). Not to spoil too much about PBEMs here, but we've been seeing more alliances and such here as well. It's just the ol' Prisoner's Dillema really.

(Herson does have a game up on his channel where a Makedon player rushes him early, but it also shows that that guy got dogpiled and irrelevant because of it)

I like the general strategy of playing out wide and for yields in the early game. Feudalism is obvious a fantastic civic, even without BBG mod, but I'm not as clear if a Feudalism rush + worker spree will be as strong here in base game. (Side note: BBG should really nerf Serfdom civic if it's that strong that everybody beelines it each game.) As for an early granary, I'm not sold. I would do it more for the housing that anything else.

My goal here is still to push a Herson-like strategy (map wiling), and try to get out to 5-6 cities relatively fast. Then focus on building upwards and getting districts down. Then the Jan push.

Shoot, I completely forgot about this and haven't given it any thoughts. What do we name our cities after?

Civ6 streamers?

I know so few Civ 6 streamers by name that I'd run out by city 3. What about.... Favorite foods? Pasta shapes? Favorite cities that start with Q? lol

I haven't given it a lot of thought so far either.
