I think the demos are pretty tough to gauge this early, they're more a measure of what choices a player has made than his actual strength. I can verify the start of your thread has been more fun to read than any of your competitors. smile

Getting slightly behind probably was to be expected when going for SH. It's not something I'm too worried about, as cheap Settlers should be enough to close the gap again.

Right now I'm more worried right now about the lack of rivers around the starting location. Hopefully the others are in similar dry situations.
