In answer to your original question, I got the impression this game may have been a little too "artificial" for me. I still enjoy playing the basic game, and keeping a lot of records seems to detract from that enjoyment. After reading Ranamar's report, though, I'm kind of wishing I gave it a shot.
I have some fond memories of Pokemon: we gave Silver to my son for Christmas when he was about 5 years old and couldn't even read, so he needed lots of help. I couldn't talk him into the proper min/max mindset, and he ended up with a team led by his super Furret. A year or two later, I got a Crystal game, which I played with my son's old Gameboy Color (he had moved up to a DS). It was a very well-designed game, enjoyable by a 5 year old and his overly analytical Dad.
