you cannot go far wrong by just looking at the SI Forums (http://community.sigames.com/) - aslong as you stay away from the LLM Crowd (they have their own Sub-Forum) the community is Very helpful for new players.

Generally depends how much help do you need.

Tactics & Training section on SIgames forums has plenty of long and detailed threads on various topics from the basic ones to very advanced ( and fuzzyily uncertain ) engine inside works. It requires some ability to discern good info from dross, but as a general rule of thumb long and detailed posts contain decent info ( or at least start a longer discussion that eventually arrives at decent results ). Avoid 'supertactics' though, most of them are rubbish or use engine exploits.

FM Career Updates section on SIgames are also a good read. Some of them go deep into details and even the brief ones give at least a good idea of what to look for in a player and why.

Other place to visit is FM Britain ( http://www.fm-britain.co.uk/ ). The Tactical Theorems ebook they distribute for free is top quality.

Problem is they lost most of their best contributors over the controversy about charging for said products.

As far as I'm aware they got Cease&Desist from SEGA regarding charging for anything FM related, so that is a past topic. And even then it doesn't really take anything from what they wrote in the past. It's still plenty of quality information. But as I said, I haven't actually touched FM since last autumn, so I'm not really up to date on where to go ( apart from community forum ) that's good now.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll do some reading smile
If other beginners are looking for an example of what the game looks like in action, I found this FM 2011 youtube series quite entertaining:

I looked at half the first video. It may be good to go through, but as regards getting information about gameplay etc. it's not that great.

Oh, and it looks like he's going after the main targets too, Munoz has been a big noise for a while now. So you'll probably pick up knowledge if you don't follow the game outside your home, but if you do then you'll know them all.

@Mist the biggest problem with FMBritain was not that they stepped over the line with the money charging but that they tried to make out that a) it was SEGA's fault in the first place and b) anyone who disagreed with them was an obvious yes-man. I remember getting the e-mail from them at the time and it was a long self-indulgent and prissy whine by someone who on getting caught red-handed tried to blame everybody bar himself. Trying to find the specific thread but baiscially it was a giant FUBAR by FMBritain.

Found it. Yeah it was them using the knowledge of beta-testers to develop various guides to the game and then charge for them, despite SEGA and SI saying they could only do stuff like this if it were free of charge (i.e. they could use their insider knowledge all they wanted and keep producing without selling the guides). It was a huge deal at the time.

Like I said, right now I don't know anything about the game at all. For some mysterious reason, it's not even available in Germany (not even on Steam) unless you import it. And while you can select a ton of usually not available languages, selecting German is not possible huh
For years, I've read that SEGA's manager was supposed to be a hidden gem, but you had to put in some real work in to understand the game. However, until now, the sub-par presentation has put me off (sorry to say that, but the first look at the game reminds me of an excel sheet) :neenernee

So I will keep lurking here while playing myself and maybe become an FM follower as well smile

OK looking at Twinkletoes' picks and going through them I'll put my thoughts here. (Included in quote box in red). All these are done from looking at them first day, so I don't have full info.
Twinkletoes89 Wrote:Looking at the save - here are a few players worth looking at: (Bold = very good, + Capitals = Top Notch)

Thomas Glover - ST - Unattached (~£500 pw) Honestly at 33 he's too old and 7/6 pace/acceleration are too slow.
Ian McIntosh - DR - Unattached (~£400 pw) I agree will be a top signing.
Calum Quinn - DR - Unattached (~£400 pw) Prefer McIntosh from what we can see. Physicals and mentals both stronger.
GERARD DUVALIER - AMC/MC - Unattached (LEAGUE 1 STANDARD & ONLY £200-250 pw) Deffo buy, EU national, good stats. OK we'll be resting him a lot but at this level he'll win us games by himself
Cesar N'Diaye - M/AM RLC - Unattached (~£750 pw but looks worth it) Going up against The Wednesday and Swindon unlikely we'll get, but yes worth a punt IMO.
David Towa - ST - Unattached (~£250 pw - Well Worth it) Again he's very slow, but otherwise very good. I know it's only two stats but the ME does bias for speed
John Neal - DC - Unattached (~£450 pw) He's not that bad, nothing spectacular, but at this level there's nothing (other than the jumping/heading) that's below par.
Alan Shields - GK - Unattached (4.5 STAR GK - ~£700 pw) We've two goalies atm for this level, while he looks good I think he's back burner material
Terry Jackman - GK - Unattached (~£450 pw) Again, looks good but we're mostly safe here.
Brian Fox - ML - Unattached (£5 pw) @17 and @ £5pw we can't go wrong definite buy.
Alassane Sanou - DC - Unattached He's good for this level, relatively fast, EU national. I'd bump this guy up a bit. He's as good if not better than our 2nd CB
Emmanuel Noel - DM - Unattached (37 year old but still high quality - £500 pw) Cannot find, is the name right?
Alex White - DC - Unattached (£5 pw) Looks good, is a prospect, cheap at twice the wages
LEONTIN MORAR - AML - UNATTACHED (EXPENSIVE (~£900 pw BUT 5 STAR WINGER) Like N'Diaye we'll be up against bigger clubs, but worth the punt definitely.
Mike Benjamin - DC - Unattached (£5 pw) Looks good, is a prospect, cheap at twice the wages
Paul Johnson - MC - Unattached (Pacy with 3 star potential - £400 pw) Pacy is good, definitely worth looking
Alan Williams - MC - Unattached (£425 pw) looks fast, can play ball worth checking
ANDY RATTEN - AMR/MR - UNATTACHED (CHAMPIONSHIP POTENTIAL BUT £825 pw) Will need to look more
Jason Hines - MC - Unattached (£5 pw wage) Again he's fast, again he's cheap. Worth looking at.
MONDE ZWANE - AML - UNATTACHED (PROMISING YOUNG WINGER) Looks very good.
ERWIN DRIESSEN - M/AM RL - UNATTACHED (CHAMPIONSHIP ABILITY WINGER - PROB EXPENSIVE) Looks good if slow, better in centre. Up against stiff opposition though.
JAKE CAREY - ST - Unattached (Championship potential - ~£550 pw) He's Irish, we can build the team around him.

Staff

Stuart Hudson - Physio - Unattached (19 physiotherapy) I'd probably leave for now, our physio is good enough.
Gregg Bangura - Y Coach - Unattached (16/16 JPA & JPP plus good all round stats) - MUST SIGN!!! (Maybe as Ass Man)Tried to sign, he won't come down to our maximum.
Dave Bartlett - Scout - Unattached (11/12)
Steven Goggins - Scout - Unattached (10/14) We need scouts bad. We can hire both.
.

Of the players that you've found I like most of them. But the problem is we've only £900pw to spend. And we won't be able to swing anything out of the board. So I think Glover, Shields, Morar, Noel, Ratten & N'Diaye are too expensive, without getting rid of players.

I prefer McIntosh over Quinn for DR. I'd like to take everybody else on trial right away, apart from Sanou and Zwane, who I'd try to sign right now. I'll also add Lewis Brown the guy our ass man was talking about too.

Now lets look at some loan prospects (just from the loan list right now):
Mathys Henry 21, Sunderland MC. Slow midfielder, good skills and mental stats.
Scott Williamson 17, Dunfermline ST. Not enough stats, but worth scouting.
Ryan Timmins 19, Wolves DC. Fairly fast, not enough stats, scout.
Ray Edgar 19, Sunderland MC. Needs scouting but looks fast.
Terry Royle 20, Sunderland AML. Has decent winger stats, but needs scouting. Not the fastest.
Emmanuelle Corradi 17, Dundee DR, looks ok needs scouting.
Chris Baird 17, Dundee DC, needs scouting, good influence, marking, accl.
Duncan Stewart 21, Bolton DM, looks good needs scouting.
Ryan Duffy 17, Dundee ST. Fast striker, definite prospect for loan.
Stuart Chambers 17, Dundee MR/C. Worth scouting.
Lewis Hall 17, Dundee DC. Marking not the greatest, but otherwise a good CB.
Mario Alomar 19, Fulham DL/C. Not much stats seen, but Champ. clubs interested. Scout.

I'll leave it at that for loans. We have to limit our loans for the season to 4 long term ones and 4 short term ones, though it seems to be only for those over 23.

Edit: I went and offered contracts to the two scouts for £350 pw (Bartlett) and £200pw (Goggins). If they accept it'll be worth it, and I'll sack our current one.

I support the idea of forum member nicknames. Since we are using non real players, it won't make a difference, in my opinion.

I'll take a look at the players you guys posted this evening. It'll help me to get a clue about what the LLM good players look like. You went through the unattached player list in the search function to find this guys, TT? Did you use any other filters?

I'll try to find some players later too. Maybe sign a brazilian wonderkid lol.
