that wasn't really aimed at you - you've done a great job with this.   bow

And heck - I've been simming all along and never noticed it.

From what I can gather from various sources, I almost certainly need to either A) have the area barb busted or B) have access to axes by sometime between turn 45 and 55. Spears will start spawning when the barbs have hunting and mining and, with everyone having forest deer, everyone will have hunting by turn 10 or so and probably mining by turn 20 or 25. From what I understand, barbs gain techs 3% a turn when everyone has the tech, so by turn 55 or so, they'll have mining and can build spears.

a couple of warriors can hold off a barb spear if they are in a city, but I'd need 3 to feel safe. An axe, of course, can easily kill a spear.

I shouldn't need chariots for a little while, to deal with axes.

Interesting question is whether the barbs started with archery or not. They usually do on monarch in SP - I don't think they did in PB52. Hopefully, they do not. If they don't, I expect i'll be fine with picking up copper with city #4 (assuming that no one attacks me with chariots, of course)

so, I ran some sims for barb spear vs warrior in a city

All these were with a fully fortified warrior:

In a city on flat ground with no culture: barb spear is about 70% to win.
In a city on flat ground with 20% culture: barb spear is about 64% to win
In a city on a hill with no culture: barb spear is 50/50.
In a city on a hill with 20% culture: barb spear is about 35% to win.

A warrior gets 25% bonus for a city, with a 25% bonus for a barb attacking a city and 25% bonus for fortification. I think it a barb spear shows up before I have copper hooked up, I'll need 2 or 3 warriors in a threatened city to feel safe. I also think that I can get away without copper for a while, though, with good barbbusting.

Turn 21

HitchARide

Build a settler.   The plan was to build a road here to hook the city up.  That may change, because of what I saw when scouting.

The problem I have is that it looks like the only place to put a city that can use the fish is where the scout is, which means that yellow would mean that no one could use the cow, which is a problem.    My current plan is to settle on the hill north of yellow, which will be very strong (fish, cow and stone).    If I put a city there, though, I pretty much have to road the hill to connect it.     I guess delaying by 2 more turns is ok.

Alternatively, I might settle on the stone, but that's really strong tile.

Looking at, I think only Red is suitable. Blue invalidates any play for the end of the west peninsula and green or stone has no food of their own.

I dunno where I'm going next - this was a 2 scout move and find food.   There is SO MUCH FOOD ON THIS MAP.    Not unhappy about that or anything.  It;s just funny, is all wink

Demos are ok, I guess.   It's turn 21.

Hopefully, when I move, I'll find a different place to plant for the fish.

turn 22 sees some big news!!

The only place I can get that fish is that site there, so I guess I'm moving yellow to the hill.

That's not very big???

Oh - well how about finding Ruff?   Given the color, it has to be ruff.  I'm going to try to move away and not meet him, so he doesn't know that he's next to an IMP leader... since he's an IMP leader (imp/fin).     I want to try to get slightly more land than him in our direction, if I can.

The border with Ruff is a problem for me.

My goal is to place cities so I get the dividing line - ie, the column I marked as half way. That gives me 6 tiles and him 5.

The problem is that that's all flatland and all the land on his side is hilly, which means that I'm at a massive defensive disadvantage.

Safety would be to place a city on a hill on the mid-point... but that will obviously cause a problem for Ruff.

To me, a fundamental part of playing imp correctly is to NOT pink dot someone, to let your advantage in build speed allow you to get the disputed spots. I don't have that with Ruff, though.

*sigh* of COURSE a lion has to show up right next to my worker. my micro is shot to hell now. Maybe I should have just let city not connect.

I mean, seriously. This is the only time a worker or a settler will ever be uncovered outside my border and a barb HAD to show up. Not wait a turn, so the road would be complete.

I moved the worker to the stone and put a turn into a road. Hopefully, lion goes away. What a pain.

Lion moved away, so I moved and finished the road.

A forest grew for the cap which is nice, but also a bit of a pain. I mean, much more good than bad. The plan was to pop a turn into a farm on the wine, in anticipation of farming that before I get monarchy, but the forest gets in teh way of getting to the deer, so I have to go to the cap, i guess. So, a wasted worker turn.

Scout near Ruff is healing. It will explore the rest of the land between me and Ruff and then bust up there.

Scout near cap is in place to pull the lion, sitting in a forest.

Worker is moving towards deer, wasting this turn.

Settler in 2, settle in 4. We'll see how I do compared to others. Cities #2 should start coming out soon
