Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

[SPOILERS - PBEM17] novice and spaceman - Suryavarman of India

Chat with Rego. He might be interested in the fixed percentage deal, depending on the percentage, naturally. I guess his absolute low would be 10gpt since a settled prophet gives 2hpt and 5gpt. Probably he'll need 20gpt to be happy. It's a win-win anyway so I guess the question is, do we want to help Rego while helping ourselves?

23:15
me: novice here. Trying to think of a trade that's interesting and beneficial to us both.

Dan: ok

me: how about a fixed percentage of our shrine income?
23:16
I don't know what your alternative use for the GP is? I don't think spreading a secondary religion is particularly hammer effective?

Dan: our options are either second shrine or save for GA

me: how many christian cities do you have?

Dan: 2 smile
23:17
me: right smile

better to build wealth than missionaries then

unless you're aiming for free religion I guess
23:20
Dan: what about a trade invovling your GM?

i think we'd be up for a trade for another GP + something interesting

me: who gets the something interesting part?
23:21
Dan: we do

me: meh

a GM is better than a GP I think?

Dan: do you?

perhaps generically but not to someone with a holy city imo

me: To be honest I find it hard to value the different GPs

Dan: we're talking ~40gpt?
23:22
me: with all the multipliers yes

but getting money now instead of in the future is valuable

Dan: sure

me: hard to quantify, of course

Dan: right
23:23
me: so in what order would you rank the various GPs?

Dan: not sure

me: Sci > GP > GM > GE > GA?

> GSpy
23:24
Dan: something like that yeah

me: it's all very situational though

Dan: right
23:25
me: well as long as I can't see any clear win-win trade I think I'd prefer to just hold on to our respective great people. I don't want to end up feeling I've done a bad trade smile

Dan: what kind of "fixed percentage" were you thinking of?
23:26
me: I guess somewhere above what it would be worth to you to not trade the GP

Dan: how very ..... vague smile
23:27
me: hey, I don't know how to negotiate smile

what's your offer?

Dan: apparently i don't either

see pb4

me: what about pb4?

Dan: i apparently don't know how to negotiate

me: what did you negotiate badly there?
23:28
Dan: antisocialmunky complained about me

anyway i gotta run

i've got a few turns before i'd need an answer on the GP

so we've got some time

me: ok, see you

I didn't bother offering the GE as I don't think he'll be interested, and I wasn't sure he even knew we have one.
I have to run.

By the way, my "building wealth is better than missionaries" claim is not so clear-cut, I might go for that if I were Rego. Each missionary costs 27 hammers but produces culture, potential happiness and 2gpt. Investing 27 hammers into wealth in a typical city produces 34 gold. It's the same old problem of comparing the value of gold today with future gold.

The issue that I would have if I were rego is how long this trade would continue for. Indefinitely? Does that mean an unbreakable NAP?

Simply add a provisio that payments are halted during a war, and maybe we would need to pay back debts with interest upon signing peace if we were the aggressors.

And what if we don't sign peace? If I were rego (I'm sure you could do a whole thread based on "If I were rego..."), I'd want compensation now for the future uncertainty. Is half a shrine's income (20gpt here) for an uncertain length of time worth more than a golden age? Again, it's hard to quantify.

Well we could add a shortish NAP to the deal.

The best use of our Engineer may simply be to bulb Engineering.

Forbidden palace finished this turn, bringing our gpt at max tax to 213 gpt, and making even outrageous settlements like this one financially solvent from day one:

Our capital will be ready to start Oxford University in two turns. Pyramid Scheme will whip its university next turn.

Demographics after ending turn. Noone's saving gold at the moment.

Reply from Shoot:

Quote:Huh? The last five techs I've researched have been Aesthetics, Literature, Polytheism, Civil Service and Monotheism, so I'm not quite sure I follow about "impressive military techs"...at least I hope you don't feel threatened by me now being able to build macemen, haha. I agree that a conflict would be mutually detrimental and would be a bad outcome for the both of us.

In other news, can you believe that four (four!) great people were born last turn? I have never seen anything like that before!

Shoot

It sounds positive on the face of it, but we're still a bit suspicious. We just need a few more turns...

So since the prophet was rego's the spy must belong to Shoot. I guess he ran a spy to speed up a GP for a golden age. Expect a GA and new civics for Shoot this turn.

Well, the save's in (and probably will be for PBEM13 too soon), so you can find out...
