Would the game have been better with smaller land to force you to fight past the 3rd or 4th city?

In my opinion, no - only if that fighting meant that people were more engaged and/or killed off. The map itself was fun, except that the save only came around every 2-3 days.

I think the real problem was just playing with more than average number of people, too many people with similar schedules, too many schedules that weren't flexible enough to recover from delays.
