Soliciting newbies for BtS PBEM / Tech Thread

Woha, I just noticed how unexperienced I am at the PBEM stuff. I played about 20 MP Lan games on Paradox but never with unrestricted leaders... Hmm.

Sian, have you picked one yet? I think I saw Noble or Prince being mentioned somewhere. Wrap is Toroidal, so we don't want it too high.

Azza, expecting players to forward their turn within 24h means we might end up with 1t per 2 or 3 days in a 6 player game. I expect players to generally be able to forward their turn within 6h. I would like to stress this point, as there is still time to back out and pick up a new player if anyone doesn't think he will be able to keep up this pace.

Also, noted about proposal to coordinate EP spending. I think we will need to describe the diplo system in a bit more detail, but it seems there is agreement to go ahead with the system.

Tech trading is allowed? Just wanted to be 100% sure.

Or I ask the other way around, anything not mentioned in the first post is allowed.

And I got my mind made up on leader/civ choices. Snake pick means I will be asked when it is my turn?

People have sleep/work/school/other commitments. For example, if I get sent the save at, say 1am Thursday morning my time, I probably won't be able to play until 7pm that night because I'm at uni all day.

This can be mitigated by setting up the turn order so that it follows people's availabilities, but IMO it's unreasonable to expect a 6 hour turnaround.

Tech Trading is off.

So, from what I've gathered timezone wise, turn order would be something like Archduke/Xenon -> Catwalk -> waterbat/superjm -> Azza -> Archduke/Xenon, assuming everyone can spare some time in the evening to play their turn. The potential bottlenecks would probably be Archduke and Xenon (and to a lesser extent Catwalk), and waterbat and superjm, so getting the right order in those blocks could be the difference between a turn every 2-3 days and a turn every day.

Post the leader choice in my thread or here or will I be asked? Or has everyone just not choosen already?

We'll make our picks in this thread, so you'll know who has been picked.

Tech trading is off, yes. It is almost always turned off in these games, so I didn't think of it.

The premise of a 6 player game is a high level of availability, else I don't think it will work. If we get one turn every 2 days, I think people would be disappointed. Should we consider sizing down to a 4 player game?

Azza -10
Catwalk +1
TheArchduke +2
Xenon +2
superjm -4
waterbat -4

Please correct me if I'm wrong on any of those time zones. I'm available early in the day and will be able to forward the save not long after I wake up, say 10:00 my time usually. Which is 9:00 for Xenon and TheArchDuke. If their turns are done by 18:00 their time, it will be 12:00 for either superjm or waterbat. If they can be done by 20:00, it will be 14:00 for Azza. 6h to play means it will be forwarded by 20:00 Australian time, which is 6:00 for me.

TheArchDuke and Xenon, you need to decide among yourselves who would prefer the earlier slot and who wants the later one. Who is more likely to be available around noon and who would rather play closer to evening? Same for superjm and waterbat, who wants to play around noon and who would rather play in the evening?

TheArchDuke, here is an example of how the snake pick works. This is the picking order:

1. superjm
2. waterbat
3. Archduke
4. Azza
5. Xenon
6. Catwalk

1) superjm picks India
2) waterbat picks Willem (FIN/CRE)
3) TheArchDuke picks Churchill (PRO/CHA)
4) Azza picks Inca
5) Xenon picks Mansa Musa (FIN/SPI)
6) Catwalk picks Ragnar (FIN/AGG)
7) Catwalk picks Rome
8) Xenon picks Egypt
9) Azza picks Louis (CRE/IND)
10) TheArchDuke picks Celts
11) waterbat picks Mali
12) superjm picks Pericles (CRE/PHI)

Does that help clarify the system? The process might take a day or two with 6 players, and it is common to discuss with lurkers in your own thread what to pick.

I prefer evening and mornings vastly to noon.
I would prefer to play alone, but if you think it better feel free to team me up with someone.

<snip>

Ideally, we go at about 1-1.5 turns per day, but I don't think it's the end of the world if it's a bit slower, as long as people are reliable.

Also, I'm +10, not -10, but it's not a massive difference.
