I am assuming this might be a potential contention zone...

I followed Rusten advice (the evidence is clear...) and:

   

We met the annoying French!  (nothing against Mr. Cairo, being a lame frog myself)
Maybe I should send him a greetings message. I am unsure about how we should handle this: ingame messaging, PMing, chatting somewhere? (I guess a thread is out of the question to not spoil other people). Anyway, we need to sort out this rather quickly because I would really like to befriend him if possible (don't know him, I hope he isn't bloodthristy) so we don't both criple our game...

Including another scout in the build queue rather quickly should be a good idea now to scout his surroundings and know about his strategical possibilities

I guess I answered my own question (edit: I now see your post Charriu, tx for the quick reply): 

   

Borders popped and we are now working the forested silk tile. till 5 turns to worker. I hope he doesn't get silly warrior rush ideas... I would rather not have to switch to a warrior myself.

He's a cautious player so he'll make a very good neighbour. The only downside (which is significant) is that he's creative. He definitely will not warrior rush you.

I think sending private messages was the consensus for diplomacy, but I'm not sure.

I will check if I can find anything regarding diplo in the game thread. If you are right I shall draft a PM in the evening. Him being creative is annoying, but OK if I can get a religion (by myself or spread) early. Anyway, I think I will try to lobby him into not settling overlapping cities (well, some tiles might be OK) so we both stay calm and peacefull. (I am not building a wonder in his face for instance)

edit: his other trait is also minorly annoying Finally all this is annoying (a French imperialistic creative civ in my face  )

Rereading the mandatory Attacko's Elephant Rush Tactical Guide might be a good idea, depending on how my PM is received

Getting a metal, and settling both ivory in first ring too (let's see how this idea will be perceived by our new friends).

I need to test it (did I say I am rusty?) but I am under the impression he won't see my scout if I move out of position next turn?

Meanwhile (damn containment)... I worked on another build up:

worker -> warrior -> workboat (working max food, it's finished just as the city grows size 4 and fishing is in) -> worker (one chop) -> settler (two chops) t32

   

19 overflow so with 2 chops (2 remaining forests), we can make another settler, with 15 overflow afterward  (2nd warrior). I am willing to go that path, 2 settlers fast, one to claim copper (let's keep optimistic), the other one to settle a border with the French.

I am leaning toward ressources off, culture on, city info censored. Even with those terms I am giving him much more than what he can offer to me (maybe that's the warrior in me speaking), as I know where he is while he doesn't. In my mind I should ask for something in return, like no competition to a discussed city site. Or I just make a note about it and don't ask anything to show my willingness to have a midterm ally.

But I am a noob regarding diplo, so I would fancy advices . I'll prolly tend to be agressive I fear.
