Screen Shots

I was wondering what you guys use for taking screen shots of Master of Orion while using DosBox. My method of hitting print screen then saving to paint is somewhat unsatisfactory.

Hmmm, unfortunately that's pretty much what I do also, although I use IrfanView instead of paint, which is just an image viewer. I know DosBox has a screenshot capability, and have used it a few times, but the resolution didn't seem as good, and with Irfanview I can crop or resize right away, and name the file what I want, rather than sorting through random-named files later. If someone has a better solution, let me know too!!

Hi,

what's wrong with print screen and Paint? Every screen capture program you use will require at least a key stroke and/or mouse clicking, so I'm not sure what you are searching for. If you don't need powerful image processing functions, you may try out IrfanView - it's a free image viewing program which is small, fast, has basic image editing functions like resize and crop, can save to almost every known graphic format (especially jpg) and can capture screen areas, although I haven't tested that feature yet.

I'm using xv under Linux though, so I cannot really comment. wink

I think thats pretty much the only method to take screanies. My only problem with it for MoO is that, for whatver reason, if I get my cursor back out of Dosbox via any method (alt+tab, windows key, Ctrl+Alt+Del) when I go back into Dosbox none of my keyboard keys work. I could live with not being able to name ships, but no F2/F3 key is the straw that breaks the camels back on anything but a small map. This forces me to do prtscr, windows key, paste/name/save, return to dosbox, save, windows key, close dosbox, restart dosbox, load game. Sometimes I can shortcut it by using F10, sometimes I can't. Depends on what I'm taking a screen of (like if its a screen of tech choices I can't for example). For this reason I probably won't take as many screens as I should or would like to frown .

The secret is Ctrl-F10. When you fire up DosBox, its cursor doesn't move until you click in the DosBox window or hit Ctrl-F10. That lets DosBox "capture" the cursor, and now you can't move the cursor out of DosBox. If you hit Ctrl-F10 again, DosBox releases the cursor, and you can use windows keys, move the cursor anywhere on the screen, click on the taskbar, or whatever, and not upset DosBox. I still forget to do this a lot, and I feel your pain. The key is to make sure you have the standard windows cursor instead of MOO's pointy finger before you hit any windows keys.

The latest version of DosBox (0.61) seems to be somewhat more tolerant of Alt-Tab than the older one I had, but I think I've still had it go into "ignore the keyboard" mode.

My only problem with paint is cropping the borders. There must be some way to do it though, I'll just have to sit down and figure it out I suppose.

Cropping the borders with paint? All I do is paste in paint. Reselect what I REALLY want into another paint, and save.
On average, everybody thinks they are above average.
