Imperium Four - Veteran's Challenge

I'd like to make some really insightful comentary on this game, but I have to confess that I can't because I've never reached those kind of tech levels even with a Psilon final war win, and I've never won militarily from that deep a hole. Since "wow" is allready taken, I honestly don't know what to say. Maybe congrats for coming back from a "totally lost game".

That is one mean runaway Psilon you have there! I feel your pain.
On average, everybody thinks they are above average.

Intially, I send scouts to the nearest stars and hold off on sending the colony ship to the nearby stars. Shortly thereafter the scout discovers Crius (D40) and the next turn, the other scout finds Mobas, an A70. The colony ship is sent to the larger planet.

On turn 15, we encounter the Darlocks. By turn 30, the Darlocks already have colonized 5 planets and are heading towards one of the planets I had hoped to colonize. On turn 44, we encounter the Psilions and within the next couple of turns, the first election happens. It was the Psilions versus the Sakkra.

By turn 49, the Psilions had parked themselves in orbit around my ocean planet (I didn't take very good notes in this game...). The next election (next turn) was again the Psilions versus the Sakkra. I vote for the Psilions. The same turn, we discover an artifacts planet, but unfortunately, it has already been scouted.

In 2356, a major quake hits Meklon, kills 30 million and destroys 277 factories. My notes say: "Game over..." But, I decide to continue playing to see how long it would take to get eliminated...

In 2368, the Psilions control over 12 star systems... Shortly thereafter, the Sakkra ambassador goes diplo and attempts to kill the Mrrshan ruler.

Several more years pass while I am struggling to maintain my colonies in spite of Psilion and Darlock incursions and attempting to get other rulers to break alliances and start wars... In 2384, we lose Incedius to the Darlocks who brought well over 50 ships to ensure space superiority.

The vote in 2400 is still the Psilions versus the Sakkra. I lost contact with the Sakkra sometime over the past couple of years, but in 2404, they reappear on our diplomatic screen and declare war... The Meklar are very far behind all other races in terms of technology. The fact that I had only grabbed about 5 planets before losing 2, didn't help the situation much...

In 2415, my dreadful luck changes a bit as a wealthy merchant aids the Meklar cause with 1100 BC. The lack of waste cleanup techs has really hurt. Shortly after the 2425 elections (Psilion versus Sakkra), we manage to steal enhanced eco restoration from the Sakkra (after having just made peace with them... smile)

Sometime thereafter (in the 2440s), the Sakkra declare war on us again. Another election (Psilions versus Sakkra) where we vote for the Psilions. How do the Psilions show their gratitude for having such a loyal friend? They glass Cygni on me. Then in 2466, a computer virus wipes out over 2000 BC of weapons research and the Darlocks declare war.

I didn't expect to live much longer, so I stopped taking notes... But, somehow, I survived to 2656 when the Psilions declare war on me. A few years later, 77 million foment a revolution on Crius. A few turns later, another rebellion (125 million) occurs on Meklon. In 2672, the Psilions glass Meklon. After this, they come offering peace. Since I just want this game to end, I refuse and they offer 15275 BC. Well, if you put things that way... So I take it.

In 2675, I vote for the Sakkra, but they then turn around determined to kill me. Shortly thereafter, the Silicoids declare war, and then another few turns later, the Psilions declare war again (on me, a 2 planet empire...). Mobas was destroyed by the Psilions in 2692. Shortly thereafter, the Sakkra come begging for peace and even offer 14750 BC for it. The Psilions then offered almost 20000 BC for peace.

The Sakkra then redeclare sometime shortly thereafter and then make peace with me again (offereing the Mauler device). Finally, in 2750, the Psilions manage to get enough votes together to win (of course, had I abstained (with my 2 votes...), they wouldn't have won.

Hopefully the next time I try Impossible, I won't have quite so much bad luck... (and now, knowing that the AI will offer really high level techs for obsolete ones that weren't in their tech tree, I might have decided to keep trying to win...)

Thanks for the game!

Well, at least I don't feel bad about taking the early diplo win now. My motivation for doing that was also primarily the tech superiority of the psilons, even though my psilons were wimpy compared to yours. You managed to get the win a vote ahead of me primarily because I had no contact with my opponent (silicoids)for so long. I think you had the most similar land grab to me, mainly because my Psilons expanded very slowly. Yet annother solid/instructive game from Zed.

Your darloks were scary compared to the norm for sure.

I've never actually had to deal with runaway darloks (not that yours were, but they were pretty dern poweful compared to the norm for darloks), but my gf had a game where she was getting framed about 7 out of every 10 turns by them. It was the funniest thing I have EVER seen in moo. I am, however, in absolutely no hurry to experience this first hand.

Yes, I didn't even mention the spy wars that were constantly going on. The first hundred turns or so were pretty quiet, but the next century, every other turn I was losing bases or factories from somewhere, and although the message would pin it on my allies the Psilons or Sakkra, I knew it was the Darloks. I also got several warnings from the Sakkra, who I had not been spying on, and I assume that's what caused the two (thankfully phony) declarations from them. Toward the end, the tech steal notifications were also coming fast and furious, so I started trading techs like crazy, figuring I might as well get something out of it since they would probably take it anyway. Conversely, despite putting 1-2% into espionage on the Darloks from about 2375 on (at least 1 spy per year, often 2 or 3), I only got one penetration, and then got an obsolete tech.

But it was their early (armed) expansion which caught me off guard, I'm used to my fearless scouts being able to bluff away the first couple attempts until I can get some fighters out or colonies in place. I also made the mistake of settling from the inside out, when I should have sent my first colony ships to the outer planets (Beta Ceti, Incedious) and then settled the backyard ones (Crius, Cygni) after securing my borders. It seems I had the only game where the Darloks were one of the real powers. I was curious whether armed escorts for the early colonies was considered normal for Impossible, or if I just got (un)lucky?

Hello;

Got mugged by life almost immediately after posting the bug report. Two unexpected 5-day trips made it so I wouldn't have had time to finish the game even if I did manage to fix the bug... Sorry I didn't get a chance to take you up on your generous offer of aid, Maniac!

Good reports all!

Depends on how early. If we're talking "right next door" and dates in the 2305 to 2320 range, then no, not normal. After 2325, it would be abnormal NOT to see escorts or colships with guns on em. You don't get a lot of time to mess around.

It also depends somewhat on the race. It's not unusual at all to see one stinking fighter escorts from the Darloks, Humans, and Alkiris, even very early (2315 or even slightly before). The 2 races that seem to be the slowest about armed settling are the Bulrathi and the Silicoids, sometimes still using unescorted default colships for 60 years or more. Thats just a generalization. Actual game experiences may vary wink

Seems like you did pretty well to hang on for as long as you did. Maybe you could have done better diplomaticaly early on and avoided getting into this situation?? It's hard to say w/o more/better notes. At least you found out that very few situations in moo are actually hopeless as long as you can keep anyone from getting elected. Even some final wars can be won, though your chances plumet sharply when you lose the vote, and clearly a vote loss in yours or factoids game would have been hopless.
