Does this mean Occhi is back home?
Rolls out red carpet

Nah. He's been able to sneak in some quick posting while the powers that be keep are "[gooning] up the "web sense" thing" that "protects" Occhi from visiting such dangerous sites like the Lounge or here.

It goes well, or well enough, and I am "home" in an electronic sense: I can now visit my two fave pages, RBD and Lurker Lounge. For some reason, the censor program no longer blocks the sites. Yes, I am still drinking Waaaaaay too much coffee.

Won't be back in Texas for another few months, hopefully less than two. We shall see. One never knows how this Operation will change direction and tempo. Thanks, KoP, for the carpet roll, but let's keep it under wraps for a bit, saving it for when I can say, for certain, that the Rogue has Returned.

I am working about 10-14 hours a day, 7 days a week, and it is just fine with me. Makes the time go by, I have immersed myself in what we are doing. I still have a few opinions, go figure, in re why-we-are-in-Iraq-in-this-fashion-here-and-how-we-will-get-out that I keep to myself, there being little we at this HQ can do about it besides doing our job as well as we can.

From a professional perspective, it is satisfying. I will say that I no longer question our continued military presence in one perspective: there are plenty of assholes here who need killing, the carbomber's mentors and teachers for one. But ENOUGH on that. Need to keep this all smiley. :-)

I feel that I am being useful here. Have earned a measure of respect from a couple of generals, most of my peers (a few find me to be a complete pain in their arses, what with my insistence on "credit is irrelevant, team success is all that matters" and "quit your whining." The propensity to flame has carried over into RL, it seems, though we try to laugh as much as possible). Some great folks here.

On the "damnit I miss the kids and the dearly beloved Mrs Occhi" I can only say that I endeavour to persevere. So do they. Got the Missus some nice gold stuff since it was a pretty decent price: fine craftsmanship. She does deserve it, I daresay, though I am not like some folks here who buy a few thousand dollars worth of gold.

On the "wish I were playing the World of Warcraft beta" with my son playing along with me, it's just tough beans. Life takes funny old turns.

On the health score, I am still smoking, about a pack every three days, and since we are allowed to, drinking a few beers about half the days of the week to bring on the sleep and even out the strain. Tonight we have arranged a "curry night" in honor of a couple of our Brit compadres, and with the good offices of a nice local restaurant run by a man from India . . .will be a nice break. We may get a little tipsy, but I will be in bed early, as I will be on watch, which is not for the hungover.

I see that you, Sirian, are back dabbling at D2 with a friend or two, that is nice. smile Fun is where you find it.

Hope to rejoin in the fun and games soon, will be taking some leave this fall when I get home.

And then, back to training young men and women how to fly, in preparation, quite possibly, for coming over here and delivering a bit of "Love From Above." Tough love, I guess.

Warmest Regards

Occhi

Speaking of GGG... BamBam deserves credit for having endured Baal using my then lvl 20 mostly undistributed Shocker pally to carry mules thru to nm in a 4 person game. I knew it was going to be very tough. Evil Grin Why I elected him to do the deed. It was still hopless in the end, but GGG came to the rescue with 3 sets of lvl 10 Teeth. BamBam will have to fill you in with the details but Baal was no more smile

*Applauds BamBam for having the variant spirit to see it thru where others might have given up*

I knew there was a reason you wanted me to drive :P

Seriously, I think it was more stubbornness than variant spirit. There was NO way I was going to let all those deaths go unavenged. As it was, I had to recharge the THREE 110 charge slvl 10 teeth weapons to finish off Baal.

I tried several methods to convince Baal that his services were no longer needed. First there was the zealot approach--quickly followed by the "die right after recasting tp after coming through the portal" approach. Those two did not impress. Then there was the "try and stick him with an AR enhanced poison weapon (Jade Tan Do)" approach, which fared no better than the two previous approaches. Finally, my evil variant observer had the bright idea to call Tech support, in the form of GoGoGadgets, who supplied three 110 charge slvl 10 teeth weapons. Sirian was kind enough to supply a few pots before he checked out, probably giving one of these . Back to Baal. He was not exactly impressed with the new weapons, and still clung to his post after 330 charges were spent. My next call was to the bank, in the form of my sorcie. She dropped a wad of cash before departing...likely laughing herself silly lol. About 80 charges later, Baal was removed from service. hammer Silly prime evil...he was backed into the top corner of of the middle area, and kept blasting me with his mana burn---which had no effect. Gadgets don't need mana!

In other muling news, the pubbies cooperated yesterday, so I am now the proud papa of 3 hell-capable mules.

Nothing wrong with trying an ultra low lvl char in way over his head. But the stated purpose was to ferry mules through to NM. THAT is the part over which I was

I also agree with your assessment. Factoring the various bits of outside aid and the high death count, that was more a test of stubbornness (or perhaps perseverance is a kinder word) than "variant spirit".

Says the guy who took a firebolt only sorceress all the way! Ya gotta be at least a little stubborn for that, eh? :D

It is easy to miss the fine division between stubbornness and variant spirit... They are the same and yet oh so different, what's more, they feed on each other.

Best advice Charis and I give to anyone who ask about certain builds/variant ways is "Just pick a set of skills (no matter how weak they might be) and stick (pump) with it, that's the variant way" . This sounds like stubbornness, but no. It is through weakness you find strength. Strength from the power of the mind, to find soultions to your predicament, to try various ways to skin the cat. If you were just going at Baal doing the same thing over and over again, sure, that would be pure stubbornness. But that was not the case.

In the end you might not even beat Baal and rack up 100 more deaths, and it wouldn't matter a single bit. You were presented with a challenge (one that is not alway available) and tried VARIOUS ways. ( and I still have a few more up my sleeves wink ).

And now you know you can.

I would bet you were up to try some more variations if you weren't worry about Pebbles ;p

All the way through NM only, and without clearing. And yes, having to circle-tempt five Venoms at a time for half an hour and realizing that they were covering each other and their collective regeneration meant I had made ZERO PROGRESS IN HALF AN HOUR was a bit of a gut check on the stubbornness factor. Had to devise new tactics on the fly. But it also means I've done the stubbornness thing enough different ways not to feel compelled to have to prove to anybody that I could do it again if I set my mind to it. Sometimes I only want to work but yea so hard, you know? Hard enough to be interesting, enough risk to keep it honest, and a steady diet of that. Steady never was a strength of D2, though, so I had best halt my commentary there. lol
