Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

Welcome

Actually, while I'm at it, let me list the things I liked at N54 that this board doesn't seem to have. Don't take this as complaining, just suggestions that might be nice to tweak...

- To Lee: I did find the control panel, and set things to 50 posts/page and 50 threads/page. I'd prefer unlimited, or a limit of like 100, if that can be done.

- All the post/reply/etc links at N54 are text. Personal preference, but I greatly prefer those to images - it's much easier to scan a page or use the browser's find capability to locate text like "Post New" than to search for some cutesy little envelope icon that's different on every board one visits. Gris's forthcoming button adventures might improve on that; just remember to KISS. Simple text is best; shaded text on a shaded background might look pretty but takes more time and visual processing to actually USE.

- Can we at least get ALT attributes on the post/reply/etc buttons?

- "Quick Reply" at the bottom like on CFC would be awesome. I do 90% of my CFC posting through that.

- Is there a way to get the whole page as dark text on light background, rather than the reverse? I much prefer that, but I can't find it (the option for skinning has nothing there.) My Opera browser can do that by applying custom user CSS, which is decent though not quite ideal. (That's what I always did for N54.)

- For whatever reason, almost nobody used signatures at N54, at least in the Civ forum. I hate 'em, especially pithy quotes. They're pointless, annoying, and visually distracting. Imagine if we all talked like people write message board posts...

"You want to go see a movie tomorrow? People who would give up essential liberty for temporary security deserve neither liberty nor security. - Ben Franklin"
"What movie? Only two things are infinite, the
universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. - Albert Einstein"
"You've seen Lord of the Rings, right? How about Master and Commander? People who would give up essential liberty for temporary security deserve neither liberty nor security. - Ben Franklin"
"OK, we can do that, what time? Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. - Albert Einstein"
"6:15 at the Stony Brook theater? People who would give up essential liberty for temporary security deserve neither liberty nor security. - Ben Franklin"

You get the idea. Good thing there's an option to not show them here. :D

N54 wasn't giving me a lot of hassles, to be honest. I use Crazy Browser for it (It adds tabs and Ad killers to IE6) and I wasn't therefore seeing ads..

But this is a bunch faster :D

I gotta try it out in Mozilla someday - and I can go back to pure IE6, I guess..

Really nice, and I can go thru' the whole thread at once - even nicer, as I tend to logon only every day or so..

Testing the 'quote' feature. How is it we can't select what we want to quote when hitting the 'quote' icon at the top? I assume we always have to hit the reply button, then select 'quote' cut and paste specific sections, and then close the 'quote' and go from there?

The text box with the message you're quoting appears below the box where you type your post if you hit "quote". But, you can edit that section to just quote the sections you want to quote. You can't use it to quote and reply line by line, though.

You can click regular Reply, paste in the text you're replying to, and manually add [ QUOTE ] tags around. That's the easiest way to do a line-by-line quote and reply.

Of course he can. I just wanted to make sure he knew that he could use the quote button if he wanted to.

Also, we now have a real  smile

I only have Mozilla and IE to look at it in, but you're right that the second table was completely unnecessary. That's what I get for being lazy and using cut n' paste HTML. I think I've closed all the tags I can touch in this section, too, FWIW. The rest I may be able to close, but they're in another spot and I'm not inclined to risk breaking stuff unless I have another reason to do so.

Yep, that worked. Thanks :D

Oh, there's only one reason I could think Mozilla would render differently from Firefox. It was probably not sending DOCTYPES correctly, and one browser defaulted to "strict" while the other defaulted to "quirky".
Trade yourself in for the perfect one.
No one needs to know that you feel you've been ruined.

Hello !

Glad to hear RB has a new forum. N54 really wasn't in my taste. Having to guess which posts were already read and which weren't was very annoying. I'm all for CFC-like forums, so I'm going in linear view here. Is there a way to add a post to a topic without having to "reply" to a previous post or not ??? Quoting someone like at CFC is far better than replying to him like at N54, IMHO.
