Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

Showcases of Europa Universalis 3

Well now that I've screwed that up I have a few options for you as lurkers to consider:

1) restart as Aragon, either in 1399 or 1402, to continue the story slightly differently and without my current accomplishments, and strive to continue on with their story.

2) restart as another nation, which I could pick by random or hold a poll in the thread to have who I play be voted on again.

3) Since I kinda had a basic gameplay and menu tutorial so far, I could do a few small showcases on different focuses of gameplay by relevant nations (colonization by Portugal, trade and economy by Venice, mass land wars by Ottomans, etc.), to try and give a better feel of the different styles of play.

4) Say screw it all and play as France and just gobble up all of Europe into a pretty blue blob. (Since France is generally considered the Pacal of Inca of this game, with an extra specialty in owning people in land battles).

Thoughts?

I say go with small showcases. That and a non-European nation.

Yeah a non-europe would be cool, I could do one in either option 2 or 3.

I put a poll up at the top since that will probably generate more answers and I'll be able to get a better feel, so I'll let that run for a day or two before making a decision.

non-europe would be hard, unless you counted the ottomans as non-europe (really they are the only good non-christian nation)

So, what interesting non-Europeans are there? Mongols and beat up Europe?

Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

persians/iranians suck. Im not sure who the muhgals are?

The timurids and golden horde can get pretty big, I assume especially if they are played by a human. they tend to not be able to handle themselves and collapse if played by an AI, so I don't imagine they are easy to play.

What about a Japanese shogunate and take control of Japan? A tiny nation and hold on for life? Reunify Prussia? Jurchen and conquer the Ming?

prussia isn't hard to do at all. All the cores required are control by the teutonic order. But the event doesnt fire until the reformation - 100-130 years into the game.
