Nothing quite so exciting. It was all a planned move. Anyways, let's get it started.

T0-1 exercise bravery

Y'okay. It always makes me nervous to know I fully plan to move the settler on T0, and then I open the turn (last in turn order) and see.... everybody else has settled.

Seriously? Nobody is tempted by a plains hill next to the fish? I understand the Agri folks staying in place, but the Fishing guys? Anyways:

Scout sees nothing but boring land. T1 I scout briefly to see if there's anything notable:

I think I've used this theme before in a duel or something, but I don't care. Theme is current athletes on Detroit teams - I'll sprinkle in a bit of each. I just want something I don't have to consult a list for smile. Inside:

Plan in worker, BW first. FIN Fish speeds along the research nicely. I'll then chop a WB, grow to sz1 quickly while mining the sheep, and then settler at sz2 for a fast second city to use the rice. Everyone starts with scouts and will go worker (or maybe WB) first, so I have TONS of time to enjoy farmer's gambit heaven. Maybe I'll build warriors in AD years.

Also, really curious how this start will stack up against the others. Makes me nervous that nobody thought plains hill on the fish was worthwhile, but it sure seemed pretty strong to me. But we definitely have a few in this game who are better micro'ers so what do I know.

SCOUTING. Because what else is there to do in the first couple weeks of a normal speed PBEM?

I did some extensive C&D work. Here are my findings:

1. C&D is boring
2. That's it

I changed my naming scheme because I wanted something I haven't done before. Also so let's talk about this land. It's a tiny bit more interesting than C&D, which is a verrrrrry low bar. It actually looks like I'm on some sort of wheel. Even more likely that I'm in Asia because there's rice. RICE ERRYWHERE. We've also got a random bovine and Moby Dick. The lack of rivers besides at the capital is a tad disappointing for FIN, but the water is good for FIN I suppose. Yay for free Colossus that doesn't expire. Well, I hope you like cottage spam because that's the order of the day.

This is definitely pretty heavily hand-crafted. The only real place you see giant swaths of grassland with no vegetation like this is pretty much Donut maps, and... well I guess we don't need to rule that out. But I kinda doubt it. Well actually I could see this being a heavily modified donut. Also, I think Commodore's "hill" button was broken when he was making this wink. In related news, the state of Iowa is suing for copyright infringement.

Jeez, uncover two riverside silver, figure out the hill button was working, so now you gripe about shorelines!

Hah! Sorry, none of the hill, silver, shore, etc comments were intended to be gripes. The hill comment was my bad attempt at humor. And I like noting oddities about the map, it's helping me confirm that this is pretty heavily hand-crafted and likely not very strongly based on a script. If I could figure a script that it was noticeably based on, I could start to figure out the map really quickly. If I can find enough odd things that a generator wouldn't do though, I then need to think about how you would set it up if you're making this primarily from scratch.

So no, not griping. Just thinking aloud and telling unfunny jokes. smile

To clarify on the shorelines - I've already noted that this type of green flatland swaths are only really noticeable like this on Donut... But obviously these shorlines are nothing like a Donut besides being occasionally a little rounded. Therefore, hand-crafted. I just didn't spell it out.

Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.
