Salty water but hard to say how large this body of water is, could be some kind of inland sea but can't really do much except speculate for now.

Could it be the Firth of Forth possibly?

Too large, probably the North Sea but you can never tell!

I suspect this is where my game starts to unravel. Why? Well its getting close to that time where I have to decide where to settle and I don't much like my options.

Here's a shot of my land and immediate surroundings. The original idea floated around was to settle 2N of my improved Wheat and use that to accelerate growth of the 2nd city. That's not a bad plan if the city can grow and work some useful tiles early on but that spot only has the dry Corn going for it before I get Iron Working so I'm inclined to explore other options.

Alternative #1

Settle 1S of the banana tile instead. This spot will grab the Pigs to the west when the capitals borders expand again in 30 turns but loses the ability to improve/work the Corn immediately so I think this option is weak.

Alternative #2

See the Wheat to the SE? Settle 1W or 1N of that. Either choice can work the capitals Sheep right away and then improve the Wheat which would be a 5/1/0 tile. The 1N option puts Stone in my borders and opens up the possibility of going for Stonehenge which I find an attractive proposition.

Alternative #3

Settle NW between the Dyes and the Corn. This spot is on a hill so is better vs the barbs that will begin to show up but otherwise this seems similar to Alt #1 in that their main selling point is dry Corn and not much else.

Alternative #4

Screw settling close to the capital! Go 2E of the Sheep! I can't justify settling here first, its the lowest food option early on and we won't get use out of the Sheep until getting borders popped and 3 Spices don't do anything until Calendar.

Alternative #5

Don't settle, play a OCC game. This has the upside of giving me less thingies to manage.

So I think exploring the alternatives has changed my mind and I think 1S of the Stone and going for Stonehenge is the new plan.

Just a note, the wheat south of the stone looks dry, that's a 4/1 tile. The stone tile itself is also a 2h plant.
If only you and me and dead people know hex, then only deaf people know hex.

I write RPG adventures, and blog about it, check it out.

Ahh yes I forgot about the 1f from the river. I didn't seriously consider settling on the Stone since it creates a hell of a lot of overlap between cities and I kinda want the sheep in the city east of that later to help it grow. I'm loosely assuming I'm going to settle just south of the Silk tiles later so my spot fits better with that too.

Terror + silent lurkers, what do you think?

Its a bear.

Well unless there's some hidden combat modifier, this is a straight 50-50. Where's the I'm crossing my fingers smiley?

First order of business was to check the fate of the warrior.

He's alive Jim! No hits taken so he can continue exploring.

Well there's the Horses and now I'm wondering if the land opens up to the south and isn't just a safe few tiles for me to settle later.

Scout got to the west coast again a little earlier than expected, some more lush land to settle once we can hack the northern jungle down.

And the big news? We met someone!

...

11 turns ago...

Just noticed there's no ? next to REM's name and we have 44 EP's on him just enough to see his graphs. No you don't get to see his graphs lurkers, I already hit my screenshot quota today. Anyway I'll look back at my thread for a sec to see where my scout was 11 turns ago.

**play jazz intermission music here**

So it seems likely REM's scout got eaten by the injured Lion we fought earlier, so he probably moved after me, made contact, then died EOT to Herr Lion.

Now that I've got your attention here's a status update

Scout has been defogging some of the coastline closer to my capital before moving North. He's done his job of mapping the immediate area around us so will be heading off to meet people until everyone's been contacted or the barbs thrust a pointy stick his way.

Similarly, the warrior has been doing much the same to my SE and checking there's no other seafood. He's now going to try and make sure the settler and my first 2 cities are safe.

BW came in a turn ago and I'm looking for Stonehenge so the path is Mysticism > Masonry. I'm sure I'm not doing this optimally but hopefully Stone is uncommon and not in the hands of the Ind leaders. However if they has Stone/Marble visible at the start there's a greater chance they'd pick that trait. Well fingers crossed I guess.

Scout got Woody 1 from killing a Panther a few turns ago and after healing he went to the NW.

He found the sea and after moving to the furthest NW point he also found Viking borders. As I predicted (not sure if I did in this thread or just privately to myself), this team has the largest city at size 5. So this probably means they don't have more than a single worker.

I tried to puzzle out why they're at size 5.

1. Going for early religion? Well none of them have been grabbed yet but I'd expect them to have one by now if that was their goal.

2. Early wonder? They don't have the Industrious trait but could be going for Stonehenge or Oracle.

3. They did pick a combo that suggested they were coastal and focusing on water based units/building so perhaps they've been building work boat(s)? Seems reasonable.

4. They really really like warriors....

Number 3 seems most likely but 2 is a possibility.

Also Settler finished this turn and will settle city 2 next turn on the Stone. It's another 6-7 turns until Masonry though and hopefully I can 1 turn finish it then with forest chops. In the meantime I'm going to get another worker done.
