BTW, this is looking like perfectly natural start, which anyone could get in a random generated map. Many players are spoiled by the lush lush starts usually found in the hand-crafted maps at RB games, so this will be a change for them.

Be careful for what you (as a group) ask for

someone else said they didn't like their start and something about how many people didn't settle t0 being a good sign that others were in the same boat. The lush starts we are used to sure are habit forming!

The lush starts everyone is used to aren't popular just for aesthetic purposes though, the barren shit the map generator normally spits out leads to a painfully boring early game and exacerbates what might otherwise be small inequities.

Yeah, that's the main thing - we don't do lush starts because we're lazy and spoiled, we do them because otherwise that slow first 40t or so becomes 60t or more. The early game isn't really meant to be played at a turn a day pace and accelerating through it by giving players quality starts is the simplest way to solve it without ruining the rest of the game.

The intensity of their mutual animosity is amusing, given how similar their play & posts are- if you stripped out all identifying information & Commodore's occasional forays into roleplay, I doubt I could tell the commentary of one from the other. Perhaps each sees the darkest aspects of his soul in the other. Very deep.
