Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

TheArchduke tries his best not to be overrun again as Pericles

So all in all I think I performed clearly better then PBEM #1 although that was not that difficult.

I still vastly underestimate the importance of score observation in the early game and make subpar, quick decisions.
My strategic grasp of the situation was non-existant until turn 30 and although I had my hands on the GG gambit and could rectify my mistake by going to war I did not strike the softer target due to sheer geography, Singaboy, first but got caught in an impossible war against Oledavy.

I think that Oledavy played his defense of his river masterfully and his two settlements along the river, Shuyler and Lafayette did a nice job of playing into the defensive terrain he had on his hands.

From then on my gameplay improved vastly and my tactical decisions but by then I was caught in a death spiral of a sub-par economy and an effective two front war. I had to rush my army from Oledavy to Singaboy, back to Oledavy, down to Singaboy and then finally my weakness brought along Alhambram who could smell the blood in the water.

My biggest hope a Alhambram-Oledavy dogpile on Woden never came to fruition during the 2nd Singaboy war.

From that point onwards I could only watch the milpower graphs rise against me and russian and greek troops closing in.
Desperately I nearly made it to Musketman, but Oledavy´s grab of the third GG and field cannons smashed any hope for survival.

Todo list for PBEM #4.

- More focus during the initial game
- More score observation and theorycrafting
- A clearer strategic plan

I stumbled upon this claim that you made at turn 100 while reading your thread and I feel the need to explain you why.

1: western continent lacked science city state while eastern continent did have 2 science city states (Seoul and Hattusa).
2: lack of mountain chains in western continent while eastern continent was filled with them. As result it wasn't worthwhile for Woden and me to build campuses early. For me it wasn't worthwhile until libraries+university combo and meeting Hattusa and for Woden he started to build campuses when he settled at center hilly region with many mountains.

In retrospect it makes perfect sense, but at that time I was suprised.

Just finished reading your thread.

It was fascinating to read, especially first 50 turns since it was a black spot in my information gathering about what happened in eastern continent. I met with Singaboy at turn 51 and from there I could roughly guess what was ongoing in eastern continent.
I made a mistake in my guess that you attacked oledavy while he was busy with Singaboy, because I thought that you did wage war with oledavy for 10 turns and you signed peace with him at turn 73 thus starting war at turn 63. But you actually already started war at turn 42! eek That is super aggressive, actually it was what I did hope at that time when I saw oledavy's science rate rising sharply: a declaration of war against oledavy to keep him in check. I called you a opportunistic player in my thread, but I shall take that back now.

I am wondering: you did see my galley at turn 91, didn't you? Did it ever ring bell with you afterwards that I might do a potential naval invasion against you? After all you was hit by naval invasion of Sulla in PBEM 1.

But you surely improved overall compared with PBEM 1 and good luck at PBEM 4! thumbsup

Alhambram I saw your attack coming from a mile away, as soon as Knights started to show up and your mil power rise.

But your attack conincided with Oledavy´s third DoW. I could do exactly nothing in a 3vs1 so I retreat to my two eastern cities determinded to hold.

Archduke, I can't see your photos. Does anyone know what's going on with that? They appear as the little jpeg image.
