Dhalphir makes a stunning return in a blaze of adequacy [SPOILER THREAD]

Turn 142-3
Now this is why I prefer pitboss to PBEM. Thoth is almost certainly just waiting for more units to arrive so he can properly crush me, or perhaps the artist was always intended to bring a city out of revolt once conquered. But there's a chance he bombed the artist, realised how little impact it makes and reloaded. If this were anywhere but RB, where he can just read my thread anyway if he wants to be like that then I'd be suspecting foul play, but I'd be very surprised if that was the case here. Unfortunately the way PBEM works leaves that niggling suspicion whenever an opponent does something surprising. Either way we don't get to fight a war yet. ![]() Last turn I accidentally built a spy instead of a missionary so I had to delete it. Next turn the National Epic is ready, but I won't start my golden age because I don't know what Thoth is up to and there are a couple of cities I need to convert to Hinduism to take advantage of Pacifism in the golden age.Cairo is about to get Astronomy. That'll stretch Auro's defences a bit... Cairo has 10 Rifles and 25 Cavs facing off against Auro's 10 Rifles and 15 Cavs over the battlefield. Graph dump - Score is stagnating a bit due to waiting for the golden age, a bit of whipping in border cities and saving cash. Alhazard started a golden age. Crop yield is pretty good due to replacing mines with windmills in advance of the golden age. MFG is sad though. And, despite thinking I've probably got enough units to defend against Thoth he has double my power... ![]()

Turn 144
I spent ~130 hammers on this. That's equivalent to three extra muskets which felt worth it, even if I get to Rifling in 20 turns. With that extra defence and Thoth still prevaricating over attacking my thoughts turn to golden age great people generation. Next up the 335, 402 and 469 GPP people. I have six cities that can make great people. Without starving by the end of this GA they can make: Whosit 223, Hazard 379, Spirits 330, Caledorn 179, Muffin 204, Tourist 258 (actually a bit less as it's not reached optimal pop yet) ![]() So I think I'll aim to get an Engy/Scientist/Prophet from Spirits, an Artist From Tourist and a Merchant from Hazard, ideally in that order, then launch another golden age quickly. Meanwhile I'll leave Caledorn fallow while Whosit and Muffin work on scientists and Hazard goes for another scientist in the third golden age. These will be used for bulbing along the Sci Meth-Physics line. Thoth is still on his way to Rifling, so Mil Sci and Steel are priorities, but Constitution and Communism could give end-game civics. I don't think I can reach communism unless the 3rd golden age is a bit delayed, but we'll see. Keeping pacifism out of the golden age might be possible. To do: missionaries for Muffin and Tourist. Don't get attacked.

A little late to respond to this one, but:
(October 1st, 2017, 15:28)Old Harry Wrote: but it leaves MSGT Steel exposed and that city is vital. For sure! I mean, I guess it has like some big stone heads instead of the Epics, but still: We're talking about the city with an annual competition for the best Ode to the Breathtaking Beauty of Tandem-Warhead Blaster Bombs! It's not like you can just replace that!
Turn 146
Auro had the same idea as Cairo. ![]() Meanwhile Thoth finished Replaceable Parts and has 1300 gold saved - I'm guessing he'll 2- or 3- turn Rifling. I'm going to 1-turn Chemistry and then start on Mil Sci or Steel. Still not sure which, but probably the former for Grenadiers. I'll pre-build some Maces for queue upgrading. So now sounds like a good point to throw a golden age and revolt to Caste/Pacifism/Hinduism, right? ![]() Unit costs go up by 62gpt but upkeep goes down by 20. But inflation means I'm 60gpt worse off. Stupid inflation. LT Spirits will eat it's food box and get the 335 point GP (most likely a scientist) in three turns. I was surprised to discover that Molach can get the 402 point artist/prophet in four turns (starving one pop ) meaning I can let Whosit concentrate on growth and beakers.Maj Hazard will get the 469 point GP - a Engy/Merchant in four turns, then can start on the 536 point Scientist. Muffin is going to get to 306 GPPs by the end of the GA so should be able to get the 603 point Scientist easily in the next GA. Tourist will take it easy and get near to 300 points and will aim for the 670 point GP eventually. Demos look crap still. Too many specialists... Oh, and here's a picture of MSGT Steel, just to provoke more comments. The 47% tile is now 49%, so should be mine next turn...

Turn 147
Chemistry is in and I can use research builds to 1-turn Military Science... Thoth is showing 6 turns to Rifling, but saved 250 gold last turn, so he might be able to get it in one turn and then upgrade a lot of Cuirs to Cavalry.Unfortunately maces don't queue-upgrade to Grens until you get Rifling too (wish I'd checked two turns ago ), so it'll be a couple of turns before I have them in place to defend. Let's see what Thoth does next.

Turn 148
Ohshitohshitohshit! Auro and Cairo made peace. Cairo has split his stack in half, sending a load of Cavalry into Maharaja. Presumably to defend against Thoth, but when Thoth attacks me they'll be free to take GSGT Astley. ![]() I haven't found Auro's stack of Cavalry, but because it isn't on the ? tile I think he's aiming it at Alhazard, not me. This is a *small* defence force for Auro - just don't tell him that he could take three of my cities fairly easily with it. ![]() Thoth has the highest power because every city is stuffed with Jans and he's got ~30 Cuirs poised to hit me, but Cairo and Auro are the scary ones, with more than 30 Cavalry each. Thoth's showing 5 turns to Rifling, with enough cash saved to upgrade 30 Cuirs if he wants. I can hit steel in 4 or 5 turns.
