Civ6 SG 3 - Stingy Hojo and his cheap districts

Well I played the turn and lets just hope Rome wants to talk...

Looking around at first and seeing how long Astrology was going to take I opted to grab bronze working first. Also Rome is not far and on Emperor I think they are one of the more aggressive Civ's.

Warrior healed up and I sent him to the east to scout. Also our scout that was near Rome in the south headed further away to see what else is on the map, really wanted to find a natural wonder. There was only a few turns until border growth and the city showed is was going to grab a nice plains hill for us so I got my builder to the area to mine as soon as it popped. Also interesting in the route Rome's trader took? Not sure I have ever seen that.

A few more turns went by. I sent a team north to clear the barb camp and bw came in. Just having a builder sitting around with one charge did not sit well so I chopped out a warrior in agoge and overflowed into the encampment. I had to buy the tile as I did not want to put it on our lonely hill mine or the rice which some day will be farmed, so I went with this position. Good overlook of the grasslands between us and Rome. Also my scout in the south found another culture cs (i do not remember which) Rome was the first to meet them so we got that going for us. The quest is to send a trade route if i am not mistaken so that is not going to happen any time soon. Warrior in the east has not found anything useful yet.

One turn until encampment is done. I have been dancing around with the civics trying to wait for inspirations.

Scout is not finding much usefully info, but heading north along the coast.

A couple turns later I am greeted with this

Good news at least I swapped to archery on turn 37 i think when I first noticed the invasion. Upgraded both slingers and our eastern warrior scout is almost home.

Finally here are the shots of the area at the end of turn 39

Again not much noteworthy in the east.

The far south area looks fertile though.

North I actually think a city between the mercury and incense is not a bad spot, needs an aqueduct though.

Here is where our scout ended.

I did not hit the end turn button although I have made all the moves so it is up to the next guy to receive the formal war declaration That I assume is coming next turn.

Also looking the spot (77)(1NW) of the mountain looks like a good city spot, better than the double luxury i posted about.

I had a trader take a looping route in the always war epic when I still had fogged tiles between the start and destination cities. Seems unlikely that an AI would have fogged tiles within 3-4 of their border, but other than that one time I've never seen a trader take anything but the most direct route. EDIT: forgot to say I'm lurking with interest!

Obviously we weren't particular clear in this thread -- I thought we agreed to attack Mediolanum asap, that's why I built all those slingers. For the future, given that you had access to Archery and a bunch of gold -- why not upgrade the slingers before sending them out of your territories, especially if you are purposefully going after a camp. The ranged unit wouldn't have had to come into combat with the spear then too.

Anyway, it almost worked out better for us -- we can now slaughter the Roman army in the field, and go take his cities with promoted units and no defenders.

Just to avoid similar confusion for the future -- what sort of schedule did you think we had in mind for capturing Mediolanum?

-Didn't grab archery until Rome was on its way.
-Western slinger ran into roman warrior, then a barb scout stopped my movement for several turn
-It was agreed no cheese moves i thought rather than fighting all those warriors in the mountains of Mediolanum I wanted to fight in open grass.
-Got a district down at least.
-Rome has tons of culture and oligarchy is close, I may not be as capable general as you but fighting Rome in there territory with oligarchy and probably legions / archers on the way seemed suicide. I chose to bring them out of upgrade range.

Just noticed how much we lucked out on the iron mine at the capital. Definitely have to go the military expansion route now.

Also re-read my post, did not mean to sound defensive I will play my next set a bit better (I am still learning optimized play, I usually just wing it and restart / concede in MP if things go south).

Ya it took me a minute to realize that iron was there.

Well initially with our warrior 9 turns from roman borders and the tight hill forest area I would have had to go through to get to Mediolanum I was just going to upgrade and build warriors and head in. Then I saw the forest and noticed we wanted a district and the encamp seemed like a good call It was done in like 3 turns I believe with the very good chop from an almost complete warrior going into it.

So with the encampment choice I sent my slingers out to fog bust a bit. Was not counting on running into a spearman in the north or our slinger would have been fine. I did not think to much on time frame though. If Rome did not send there units at us we would be in a very bad position.

I will ask before my next turn set what the goals are and attempt to pursue them better. Good Luck Quagma, your up next.

No worries, Emp, I was just worried that our prior discussion was too chit-chatty, and not clear enough -- you had perfectly good reasons to amend the plan as required, and indeed showed a better knowledge of AI psychology than I have, it's just that from your report I didn't get a sense of why you played the way you did. As it is, we are standing quite well, looking forward to the upcoming report. We'll probably lose the camp, but that's very cheap to repair, and we have more than enough units.
