Woden's Rise and Fall from Civ VI glory

Here is my PBEM 14 thread. I get to chose from Victoria, Montezuma, Alexander, Jadwiga, and Pedro. Not sure who but thoughts will be coming soon.

Not too excited about my civilization picks. Nothing really stands out as a "must play". My picks from least interested to potential picks are:

Brazil/Pedro Been there, done that. Not interested in playing them again.

Aztecs/Montezuma Farming city states for builders is interesting but I don't think Monty has had very good luck in the PBEMs so far. Good civ for early aggression but I really want to get the foundation for my civ down before I go to war and make sure I don't fall behind if it doesn't work out.

England/Victoria Good economic civ and a strong naval civ. England has been played a lot in these PBEMs. Extra trade routes and cheap harbors are very appealing. They work well with a builder player like me but on a continents map, taking over your continent is priority one before a strong navy is needed. England is still in contention but probably won't use them.

Poland/Jadwiga I found religion very useful in Rise and Fall. Get your faith up quickly and expand through faith bought Settlers and Builders, then later build an army with faith. Faith is a very useful currency in Rise and Fall. The problem here is that Poland has no bonus for getting a religion. They get extra adjacency bonuses to Holy Sites but no bonus to getting the religion. I suppose having 1 military card changed to a wild card is good and means you can run the +2 prophet card sooner could mean an early religion but you will miss out on Agoge when building units. The Winged Hussar is an awesome unit, since it can push units back, but it also doesn't replace any units so you have to build them from scratch. Culture bombs from Encampments are good, saves money on tile buys. The bonus on relics is pretty useless, since goodie huts aren't in play and we rarely see religious combat to use martyr.

Macedonian/Alexander The ultimate warrior civilization in the game. No war wariness and science from building units, means you can build more units and war longer than anybody else as long as you have the economy to support it.  Two classical unique units begs for a classical era war. I am a builder a heart but it hasn't brought me to victory yet. Maybe a good warring leader and game is what I need. It seems that the players who are aggressive in the PBEMs tend to fair pretty well.

Out of all my picks, I think I am leaning towards Alexander and I will play more of an aggressive game; lay the foundation in the Ancient Era, build Encampments and Bailikoi Paides, then pump out units to conquer my neighbors. I still need to think it over a little bit. Poland and England are still options but right Macedonian is in the lead.

Since it looks like everybody else has sent their pick, I will go with Alexander. Plan will be to settle a few cities, race to Bronze Working, get some encampments and Balilikoi Paides up and running, then go on the offensive to conquer my continent.

Pre-game Analysis
I play against:

suboptimal: Gitarja/Indonesia
I like playing Indonesia on water maps. The Jong is a nasty unit and the Kampung is a nice improvement, boosting useless water tiles. I expect they will go for an early religion and stockpile the faith. Good chance they will try to get Goodess of the Harvest or Earth Goddess as a pantheon to boost faith productions. They will also probably settle the coast first. I hope I am on the same landmass as them, so I don't have to deal with the ships.

Alhazard: Seondeok/Korea
The science master. I expect they will take an early lead in tech and stay there most of the game. I don't have much experience with the Hwacha, so don't know if it is a good unit but their Seowons are awesome. Alhazard will probably turtle up and tech until they have a huge advantage, before striking out. This could be an issue if they get too far ahead. I also hope to start on their landmass and would probably hit them first before they can get too much of an advantage.

TheArchduke: Robert the Bruse/Scotland
I am surprised TheArchduke didn't take Gorgo, given his play style. Maybe he wants to try a builders game. The 100% production after declaring a War of Liberation would be nice but who is going to give him 5 turns after denoucing. Nice bonus for happy cities, good all around civ. Surpisingly, after 3 PBEMs, TheArchduke and I have not fought a war. I not sure that streak will make it a fourth game.

Rowain: John Curtain/Australia
Nice builder civilization with a nice production bonus if war is called on them. Outback station and digger are both nice uniques.

Looks to be a bunch of builder civilizations with me being the only aggressive/warring leader.

For the start:

Nice start...horse, deer, sheep, mercury, copper and wheat. I think I am going to move to the plains hill. I usually don't move on the start but the extra production will be very helpful, plus it will give my capital three single lanes of attack and will be fairly easy to defend. That will make the deer and sheep 1st ring and mercury, wheat, and horses 2nd ring. Copper and deer will be good for gold, since I will have a lot of units to support. Potential for a nice campus down the road on the other side of the mountains. Desert in the south looks big, let's hope it is not too big.

From the settler lens, I look to be on the east coast of the land mass, unless that is a bay on the northern side. I will scout west first and probably send my first settler that way to get a road going quickly, for easier travel to my neighbors.

Starting plan is to get 3 cities out, build encampments and my unique barracks, then build an army. Tech-wise, I will start with Animal Husbandry, then mining->bronze working->archery then make my way to horseback riding and iron working and get my uniques online. Good thing nobody with a starting wild card slot is in game, the first General should be mine and I will start my advance when I get him.

Should be a fun game.

Thanks Ituralde!

It begins...2 turns to report.

Turn 1

I decided to move the settler to the plains hill and will settle next on turn 2. This will give me an extra cog at the city center and let me start working the nice 2 food/3 cog deer tile immediately. A 7 production start is worth the delay of 1 turn. I lose first mercury and horse but the tile selector should grab those before the builder is done. I move the warrior west and see this...

Nice river with some stone, potential second city location somewhere in the northwest. Suboptimal has 3 points, so did not settle this turn but possibly has a natural wonder close. If so, he will definitely go for an early religion and potential defender of the faith player. Not much else for turn 1.

Turn 2

Turn came back quickly and was waiting for me when I got home from work. I think this should be a good paced game with 3 players spread across 3 US time zones and 2 in Austria (I think Rowain is Austrian?). We will see. Anyways, for the turn, only Alhazard settled on turn 1, everybody else moved. Rowain has 3 points, most likely for a natural wonder as I don't remember anything else that could give 3 era points on turn 1. Another potential competitor for the first religion. I settle on the plains hill...

And move the warrior west to reveal a group of hills and some more stone. I think the warrior will head north before crossing the river, then head west and circling around south. I decided to go with a warrior start and get him scouting south to see the size of the desert. With the high production start, I think my build order will be Warrior->Slinger->Builder->Settler. Builder would not have much to do if I built it second, so better to get a slinger out. I might switch to the settler once I hit size 2 for an early 2nd city. We will see. I started researching animal husbandry to be able to hook up the horses. My first Builder will mine the mercury, pasture the horses, and farm the wheat for 3 nice boosts. I will probably have to buy one of those tiles but they should be the next 3 tiles the tile selector selects.

In general terms, I want to build a large army for a classical era rush but I am not going to build too many units until I get the unique barracks up in my cities for the 25% science.I will probably start with 2 warriors and 2 or 3 slingers, then  lay off the units unit after a few encampments are down. I think 3 cities should be a good start. Research-wise, I will focus on the lower half of the tree but hold off on Ironworking until I can get a bunch of warriors out to either upgrade or hold in reserve.

As for a naming scheme, I was thinking since Alexander is probably one the better military leaders on history, I could go with other great military leaders as a naming scheme, but with a twist. In my past PBEMs, I seem to start off strong, get into a good position and then utterly fall on my face. So, to go a little off-the-nose and stick with the Rise and Fall theme, I think I will go with military leaders that failed, loss, or fallen for some reason, let it be lost on the battle field or some scandal. I probably will stick with mostly US military leaders, since that is what I know. I will take suggestions but as a start I could go with (probably just use their last name): Benedict Arnold, Horatio Gates, Robert E Lee, George Custer, Oliver North, David Petraeus, George Patton, Douglas MacArthur, and Tommy Franks for a few examples. I could probably add a few more civil war generals if need be. Anyways, let me nkow what you think or if you have suggestions.

Luckily it is only turn 3.

We are back to Turn 3. I moved the same as previously played, so no changes in information. Turn 3 is same as above picture, sans goody hut. Next turn I will move along the river to tundra tile to see if I can find the coast, then cross the river on Turn 5. Since view is teh same, here are the great people...

Nothing too game breaking but the GM would be nice. I will build a few Hubs to support my troops, so it is possible. We will see.
